Music Showcase Awards: And the Winners Are...

The 14th annual Westword Music Showcase Awards ceremony is now in the books. Holy crap! What a party! We haven't seen that many inebriated folks in one place since...well, probably since the last party we threw. In his Fluid review, Michael Roberts joked that "if terrorists wanted to rob Denver of its most devoted music lovers in one fell swoop, they should have targeted the Bluebird." That sentiment was even more valid last night -- only add the Mile High City's best musicians, several prominent radio personalities, numerous bar owners and a slew of its biggest boosters to that equation. Click here for slide show or see a complete list of the winners after the jump. -- Dave Herrera

Someone with Taste says:

Jesus Christ the people of Denver are retarded and have no taste in music! I can't believe P-nuckle won again, and quite frankly it makes me sick to my stomach. Every band in that category was better, classier, and more original than these fucking Sublime wannabes. Thanks for another year of shitty music Denver.....thanks a lot!

Soren says:

Most of the bands I voted for won , of course I don't know all the acts on that list but it's good to see the ones I know and like are getting some love . Still thinking of my perfect local band line up.

poopee says:

That was fun, I think?

sam abraham says:

What a memorable night again especially to see the pirate signal win again. Well deserved guys. I wish Yonnas could be there to accept the award with DJ A-what but he is one busy body. No wonder why they were selected to be part of warped tour..

Jerri says:

Yeay Swayback!

harry caul says:

i hate to be a bother, but could someone explain the appeal of the swayback? actually, please don't.

Mane Rok says:

Psshhhh....people always bitching.
You mad because P-Knuckle won...or because your peoples lost?

ANyway....definitely a dope night....definitely inhebriated.....whoa.

real says:

The Swayback has no appeal. They're just local press darlings. Nobody actually gives a shit about this band.

chase says:

Congrats to the Kinetix, they are an amazing act and deserve some notice around town, glad to see them pick up the trophy. Paper Bird as well, although they've had no problem winning critical acclaim!

Can't say I caught Something Underground in the Pop category, now I'll have to, since it's saying something to say they garnered more notice than The Heyday and Set Forth, both bound for pop stardom ...

Rob Drabkin, indeed, great choice. Can't help but feel Ellison Park's 10 a.m. set didn't help him, since the two people in the audience were me and his mom ... seriously. Well worth checking out his stuff, he's a welcome addition to the scene.

DenverMusicRocks Westword is Clueless says:

Wow the Winners are such a Shocker!!! (sarcasm)Everyone is sick to death of the incestual Westword music scene, at least KTCL hooks up deserved acts. I mean the Hot Iqs and born in the Flood - how many times will they win this contest? and they still don't have a record deal!!! P-Nuckle, Swayback? Get you head checked!! Westword i'm glad you love giving awards to your friends, every year, because any band worth it's salt would never want on be on this award list!! Which signed bands from Denver have ever won awards here? NONE!!! what a joke, Herrera's a WASHUP!!

Ball Peen Hammer says:

Why didn't John Denver win any awards this year? My potholder hurts. Masturbation may or may not save or shave the whales.

actually says:

hey DenverMusicRocks Westword is Clueless-

Shut up you fucking hater. Lets see who won last year and who is signed:

Rock: Rose Hill Drive(Megaforce Records)

Pop: Meese (Atlantic)

Punk/Hardcore: Planes Mistaken for Stars (Abacus Recordings/EMI)

Country/Alt-Country: Drag the River (Suburban Home)

Roots/Americana: Slim Cessna's Auto Club (Alternative Tentacles)

World Music: DeVotchKa (ANTI- Records)

DenverMusicRocks Westword is Clueless says:

ACTUALLY -

Everyone of those bands was signed before the coveted 'award'. Devothka was up for a Grammy so no shocker that they would win an award here, but come on Drag the River and
Slim Cessna's Auto Club!!! What year is this 1995!!

bored at work says:

Hater,

$10 says your in a band that you think is under appreciated.

dick says:

$10 says hater is john denver

jimmy sparks says:

WHO CARES!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?AAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! H

Cheri Popper says:

It's not The Westword entirely that's clueless. It's everyone.
The people that use to choose the nominees were on a nominating committee. Which use to contain around 20 or so people connected with the clubs around town, bookers, owners and some scenesters thrown in. Westword use to print the names of the committee members, but now it's all secret. Why?
I was told by an unnamed Westword employee that it's because Herrera picks them all himself. He's the committee!
How many times have you seen Dave Herrera out at a show? Especially if it's new talent.
They try to make it seem democratic by letting everybody vote (I've seen ballot boxes thrown in the trash at previous showcases), but who picks who for what category?
To be honest, looking at this years winners, I'd have to say I think it's more fan driven then years past. So props for that. And the expanded selection in some categories is a plus as well.
Thanks to Westword for trying to make it better. I'm sure the online voting is helping the process.
But this years Showcase looked like it was poorly attended. I wish they would forgo the "non-local" headliners next year and scale the ticket price back to the good old days.
How about 3OH!3, MEESE and/or FLOBOTS next year?

Ben Roy says:

Fucking bogus. I can't believe Jim and I didn't win the singer/songwriter selection. Name one time you've heard the Spin Doctors crooned so serene. Do it? You can't, that's why.

Ben

patricia calhoun says:

Hey, Cheri:
the nominating committee isn't nonexistent (or even anonymous). This year, the awards were handed out at the Bluebird by actual living, breathing members of the nominating committee (not counting the inebriated committee member who had to be carried out before he could give his award -- we'll let him remain anonymous.)

Thank you.
Twice in a lifetime.
It's a rare beauty, indeed.
The Indulgers

nikki king says:

BIG surprise....SOS (same old shit). Swayback....Hot IQ's. BORING.

John B says:

Did the awards show already happen? I think I may have been in a garbage can somewhere...

John B says:

Oh yeah, and thank you Patricia for not naming any names for that poor sap who had to be helped out by security...ahem BAXTER...yup me! I was trying to show what not to do at an awards ceremony. I think I proved my point...to everyone! Ha!

alf says:

I had to fill in for somebody to give out an award - it may have been Baxter. If so, he owes me something. Not alcohol, though.

Chad says:

I don't envy the Westword's position here...there's never a fair way to do this, as music is a subjective artform that is up for interpretation. I think some people are just tired of seeing the same bands win every year. Music is kind of like a popularity contest and people typically like what other people like (which is why 3 Doors Down actually sells records). Granted, a lot of us in this scene are ambitious and seek something new, different, and independant sounding, but the majority just vote for what everyone else does, or, listen to whatever anyone else listens to (which is why that terrible song by the Flobots is so popular).
Hot IQs are a great pop band...they're the best band in that category. They have fun and get the crowd involved. I will say however that I watched the Swayback at that SoCo deal on Saturday and I was equally as unimpressed as I was when I saw them open for The Hold Steady earlier in the year; very bland and non-melodic. There were definately some better bands in that rock category that should have won, but as I said before, it's a popularity contest and apparently they are the homecoming kings of denver.

Whitney says:

Congratulations to Kinetix! They are all incredibly talented musicians and totally deserve the recognition.

Anonymous says:

So sad to see who won the contests. We feel that if someone has won before, they should be eliminated from being able to be up for nomination again. There are tons of other people that should have a chance to be recognized. There is great talent out there!

Speak in Vowels should of won for Hardcore, and Matthew Orloff should of won for DJ Dance. Just our opinion!
