Beyond Playlist: The Rapture

The Rapture flexes its DJ muscles and delivers an intriguing mix of old school rap, funk, disco, house and straight-up weirdness. Mixing old-school classics with more contemporary material, the group shows an impressive breadth and depth of taste and influences. Among the highlights are obscure gems like the Martin Circus track "Disco Circus" and Vaughn Mason & Crew's "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" alongside more recognizable names like Armand Van Helden and Thomas Bangalter. Although the flow of the mix is occasionally disrupted by the schizophrenic selection of material they generally manage to retain a sense of cohesion even as they shift gears. The result is a mix that's at least twice as interesting and fun as any of the band's actual recordings. -- Cory Casciato
