Nowadays, alternative rock station 93.3 KTCL is showing more and more love to hip-hop music on the air. First it was the Flobots being added to daily rotation last year, then it was the addition of Judgemental (of Basementalism) to Ralphie's First Trax show on Saturday mornings (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) that's seen spins of Mobb Deep, Pharcyde and Nas. Now, Colorado MC/producer Improv has been added to the Top 10 band for the station's annual Hometown for the Holidays competition. His song, "Miss Hedonist," is currently in rotation, waiting for requests. It's been a pretty good year for Improv. Back in October, he won the producer battle at the regional Skribble Jam competition in Boulder. But for a lot of folks, they first heard of Improv when he dropped his video for "Lazy." Check it out after the jump -- and good luck to Improv.
Big ups to Prov! You've always been like a little brother to me. I always told you that you would know you were about to blow when fools started hurlin hate your way. But what yall suckas don't know is that Prov was engineered to feed off the hate and still keep it positive. And we were glad to have him out here in the Nasty!

If you still doubt it, you obviously don't know shit about Hip-Hop, or music in general. well... you might know A LOT about country beats...
yes, that is yonnas verry sad on the left side of the screen.
I am the one who threw Scribble Jam @ The Fox this year. To put an end once and for all, I am the only one who knew about Yonnas's touring situation conflicting with the finals prior to the judges picking the winner. I have spoke to the judges. Improv won because his final beat was the dopest. They assured me that he wouldnt have been picked if he didnt win. No default. Yonnas is a beast, and it was a great final battle. So hopefully that ends this discussion...
Congrats to Improv for the song on 933

Yonnas I really appreciate you saying that stuff. I wasn't going to get involved in this way until people starting dragging my name through the mud. I naturally felt compelled to defend myself and I definitely will admit that I went too far. I have seen you perform and I think you are pretty dope. I will definitely say what up next time I see you and I hope that we can all squash the beef. In reality, if we all help each other it will take the Denver scene so much further than if we are against each other. Much love back to ya and I look forward to actually meeting you. For the record...I am not Improv's girlfriend or intern, just had to make that clear. WORD.
Q thanks for the love. I was very surprised at all of the hip hop entries in the contest, everyone at KTCL was too.
As for this angry beat contest stuff, Yonnas just came in here and squashed it so let's leave it at that, but on the real this state is absolutely chock full of high-quality, innovative, creative, and just downright dope hip hop producers. We are all very spoiled.

Woah! Mane made aware of what's going on here and this is crazy. I just got home from tour and played a show the other night another night and I'm tired. Too tired for this. For real, bottom line, Improv won the battle fair and square. Congratulations to him I've met him before and he's been nothing but cool. Big ups and congrats to him. As far as Sarah. Chill. I may have met you. I may have been all up on you. Hell, I might even be "busted as a motherfucker", but one thing is definite, I have no beef with you and I hope you can see that. If you do see me around come say what's up and we can have a convo. I will try not to drool or fart. I gotta say, I've lost some weight, so maybe I don't look like shit anymore, but who knows? Either way, peace and love to all. Herman's on the twenty-sixth! Let's not fight sarah love, let's have fun.
Yonnas
of The Pirate Signal
wow.... so much hate for someone so positive?... Improv definitely deserves respect becuase thats exactly what he gives. Jealousy is a horrible thing-
"fuck the beef and let the pot roast"
Sarah and Tom needs to chill out and you both do sound like children in playground. Come to think of it I wonder if Yonas or improv are aware of this discussion taking place now? . I would like to hear what they have to say.
Wow I guess this is how controversies starts, one person says something and the other says something else. Its like a traffic accident .two witnesses have two deferent explanation for it. The point is, Im sure both of them are talented young men and you should try to enjoy them instead of trying to prove who is better and who the loser. I cant say very much about improve because I have never seen him perform but I was fortunate enough to see Yonnas of the pirate signal in action at Gothic theater this year at Ogden theater last year and he was amazing and I was so proud to learn he was from Denver. Peace

Being one of 3 people on here who was actually at Scribble Jam, I gotta set this straight.
Improv swept the competition. There was nobody there who could even touch how technical, dynamic or original Provs beats are. landslide, sweep, whatever you wanna call it, there was no question who the winner was.
To give it to YOnass, his first beat was a banger. But, it is his own fault for playing his only good beat in the first round. but i guess if he didn't he would have never made it to the finals.
I know there is video, someone needs to post it. and when and if it is posted, you can see and more importantly "hear" for yourselves who the winner was. Yonas' knew he lost before he handed his disc to the D.J.
Big love to 93.3 (a rock station)for showing love to the Colorado Hip-hop community. there is so much dope creation going on, from Improv to Doc Osc. it is good to see real music representing the CO instead of your average backpacker daddy wasn't there raps.
Improv represents a true essence of hip-hop. and for anyone to show hate on some who represents you and your same genre of music, Its a sad fuckin day.
I got to agree with sono that Improv's new album is about to turn some fucking heads on our little colorado scene in quite an astounding way. I've seen some haterade on here by a few individuals but if I had to guess they don't know what the fuck they're talking about. PS: since they care enough to talk some whack bullshit, they probably also care enough to omotion when it drops. Thanks!
I WAS JUST THINKING...YOU ALL CAN SAY A LOT OF SHIT BEHIND A COMPUTER BUT CAN YOU HOLD YOUR OWN WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT? YOU ALL KNOW OR CAN FIND MY MYSPACE, HIT ME UP AND WE CAN SETTLE THIS FOR REAL. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YA'LL FACE TO FACE. I AM NOT THE LEAST BIT SCARED OF YOU AND YOU NEED TO OWN UP TO ALL THE SHIT YOU'RE SPREADIN'. JUST ON A SIDE NOTE, YONAS...YOU WERE ALL UP ON ME AT SCRIBBLE JAM SO DON'T ACT LIKE YOU DON'T WANT MY SHIT. YOU ARE A BUSTED ASS MOTHER FUCKER AND I'M SORRY THAT YOU AIN'T AS FINE AS IMPROV. CRY YOURSELF TO SLEEP ABOUT THAT SHIT!!!!
WOW, JEALOUSY IS A MOTHER FUCKER. AIN'T THAT ABOUT A BITCH THAT YOU WISH I WAS FUCKIN' YOU. LET ME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU...I HAVE MORE HIP HOP IN MY LITTLE FUCKING FINGER THAN YOU HAVE IN YOUR WHOLE FUCKING BODY. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU WOULD TAKE IT TO THIS LEVEL. IF YOU REALLY THINK THAT IMPROV WON BY DEFAULT WHY DON'T WE BRING OUT THE JUDGES.
HERE IS MY THING, YOU DON'T FUCKING KNOW ME AND YOU NEVER WILL BECAUSE YOU ARE WACK AS FUCK. DON'T GET ME WRONG BECAUSE I GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE BUT I HAVE NEVER RUN ACROSS SUCH SORE LOSERS IN MY LIFE. HIP HOP IS ABOUT POSITIVITY AND THE UPLIFTING OF HUMAN KIND. YOU MUST HAVE MISSED THE POINT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINES. I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR YOU AND IF YOU CAN PRODUCE REAL PROOF THAT YONAS WON THAN I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT. IF HE COULDN'T GO TO SCRIBBLE JAM THEN WHY THE FUCK DID HE ENTER? I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE A POLL OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO WERE THERE TO SEE HOW THEY FEEL.
MY POINT IS...YOU CAN TALK ALL THE SHIT YOU WANT BUT THE REALITY IS, IMPOROV WON AND YOU DIDN'T SO SUCK A BIG FAT DICK!!!!! AND DREAM ABOUT FUCKING ME BECAUSE IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
Anytime people see talent and game of this caliber, they get jealous and upset.
Obviously Improv is next.
Deal with it. Most people in this scene are under-talented with an overinflated sense of importance.
Improv's Omotion is far and away the dopest thing to come out of CO since The Procussions... and I'd say from the unmastered copy I heard... much better than their major label debut.
Improv is an artist who is obsessed with every aspect of the process and has been slaving away since he was a child in total obscurity.
Give respect where its due. He's got mine.
Sono
Sarah is improv's girlfriend, or intern. She must work for free and/or be extremely sexually frustrated. The Pirate Signal smashes on anything improv has ever made in his whole life. That's why they win awards. That's why they go on tour. That's why whenever someone mentions Improv they immediately talk about that night he got his ass handed to him by Yonnas and still got to pretend he won. And this debate reappears. When The Pirate Signal comes up,does anyone mention Improv? Fuck no, cause no one gives a rat's ass about farm-hop you milk maid. Improv lives on a farm and makes rap music for pre-choolers. Literally. They don't even compare.
That is unless you are sleeping with improv. Or interning for him. Complete annihalation? Improv's beats sounded like bluegrass music with keyboard breakbeats. That fool makes farm music for farmhands and you must milk his cow....udders.
I didn't know they sold crack in boulder, but hey, they don't call it an epidemic for nothing. For the record sarah, next time you're at a battle and the entire crowd starts chanting "Yonnas" over and over that means he won. Unless you're having sex with improv. Or his intern. Which would mean your pussy has cobwebs and your paycheck is.......skimpy.
Intern.
I didn't know stating fact could illicit a "grow up" comment.
Nice...
>>>I THINK ITS FUNNY HOW KTCL WILL PLAY ALL SORTS OF WHITE FRIENDLY RAPPERS, BUT CONTINUE TO PASS UP ANY ONE OF COLOR. THAT STATION IS THE MOST RACIALLY BIAS STATION IN COLORADO. FUCK KTCL FUCK NERF FUCK ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THAT FACIST STATION.
Yeah, sounds like you find it funny, all right. There's a lot to say here, but not sure you'll want to sit through it all. I'll try anyway.
First off, the top ten thing. We got over 200 entries for Hometown for the Holidays this year. We ended up having a group of twenty or so people sit down and listen to them. We all voted on the songs - based on how good we thought the song was, and how we thought the song would do on our station - and the top ten made the cut. And yes, there's that tricky thing there. "How we thought the song would do on our station." After all, we're a modern rock station. I don't recall if I docked a band for sounding too "urban" - I may have - but I know for a fact I docked several songs for sounding too country.
(And as a side note, isn't there a hip-hop station in Denver? Shouldn't you be railing against THEM for not playing local stuff? I mean, that'd be my question.)
As for as my local show, I'll play pretty much anything. The modern rock gets more play, true, but I'll play other genres as well. I've played singer-songwriter, dance, Americana...and yes, hip-hop. And I'll readily admit that I've played more hip-hop by white artists. Racism? Actually, no.
Guess how many hip-hop artists of color have sent me CDs? Have sent me an e-mail saying "Hey, I'm a local artist, can I get some airplay"? Take a guess.
Answer - zero.
Despite this, I've still managed to play a few. I stumbled across Azma's solo CD in a stack at a friend's place, borrowed it, liked it, and played it. (Azma said he was rather stunned how that happened.) Another friend brought me a CD from a hip-hop group from the Springs, and I played that a couple times. (This group, however, never responded to any of the e-mails and myspace messages I sent them, so I don't know if they even know - or care - that they got some airplay. Judging by their rant a few months later that "commercial radio won't play us", I'm guessing they didn't.) And the third CD I bought outside a club from the artist himself.
Yeah, I play a lot more modern rock and rap by whites. But see, they actually send me the stuff to play. I can't play it if I ain't got it. If you know one, five, fifty local hip-hop artists with killer material, don't hide them from me. Hit me up on myspace, send me links, and they'll get on.

Mane Grow Up!
Yes and yes Yonnas did win that night (I was there) but he gave it up cause hell not be avail for the next level of the competition due to the tour with 3oh!3. fact is a fact!
Yes and yes Yonnas did win that night but he gave it up cause hell not be avail for the next level of the competition due to the tour with 3oh!3. fact is fact!
Yeah...ummm, truth be told, it was by default.
I aint hating, so make no accusations, I was merely pointing out what was left out.
YOnnas for The Pirate Signal won Scribble-he forfeited the win because they were going on tour with 3Oh!3 and he wouldnt have been able to make Scribble.

Get your facts straight.
I am glad your homie won, and that you are proud of him, you should be.
But there is something called reality we need to accept.
That said...I have no ill will towards homie, the few times we have met he was cool (tho he never returned a phone call.) I even said I can see why his song was chosen and such for this comp...he fits the mold there.
I gave congrats...so just reign in those horses for a sec. cowboys/girls.
G'day.
I THINK THIS SONG IS GARBAGE. ALSO HE WON BY DEFAULT BECAUSE YONIS FROM PIRATE SIGNAL ACTUALLY WON, BUT COULD NOT MAKE IT TO THE FINALS SOHE GAVE IT UP TO THAT DUDE. I THINK ITS FUNNY HOW KTCL WILL PLAY ALL SORTS OF WHITE FRIENDLY RAPPERS, BUT CONTINUE TO PASS UP ANY ONE OF COLOR. THAT STATION IS THE MOST RACIALLY BIAS STATION IN COLORADO. FUCK KTCL FUCK NERF FUCK ANYONE WHO SUPPORTS THAT FACIST STATION
I love what you're doing Improv. Get em! You deserve it.
I love Miss Hedonist and I can't wait to hear more!
I am diggin' this cat. The Mile High City and Colorado in general has long awaited a copasetic artist with this kinda unique sound. Too long has our state been bereft of recognition for good music. There is a new era of quality music on the horizon, and I can see "Improv" in the distance.
As far as the default comment goes, I was at Scribble Jam and Improv's beat did not win by default, that crazy beat won by defeat.
Why do people have to congratulate and then say he won Scribble Jams by default without even saying how it was by default!!! The fact is he won and thats that and why be jealous of someone that is representing the CO???
Word.
Props to Improv for shedding some light on the Denver hip hop scene and doing it with a lyrically conscious, exceptionally melodic song.
I was at the Scribble Jam battle and the final round was a complete annihilation.
No one's beats were as complex as Improv's and his last beat dropped so hard in the finals that the crowd was flippin' out! It was seriously a landslide.
Def. congrats to Improv...that song is hella radio steez-especially for that market!
GET EM DOG!
But...he won by default....dont forget. ;)
