Tyler Gilmore and his 17-piece Ninth+Lincoln modern music ensemble will perform the Denver premier of "Piano Roll" Sunday, March 29 at Dazzle. Gilmore, who was this year's winner in the Emerging Jazz Composer Category of ASCAP's Jazz Commissioning Program, wrote the piece in honor of legendary pianist Hank Jones, who grew up listening to piano rolls by James P. Johnson and Jelly Roll Morton. Gilmore used the sound and concept of a player piano as the inspiration for the composition, which was first performed in Chicago by the Chicago Jazz Ensemble under the directorship of Jon Faddis. On Sunday, the group will also perform songs from its debut album as well other compositions by Gilmore and Wil Swindler. It starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10 and $7 for students.
