2009 Westword Music Showcase: It's time to vote
Vote for the 2009 Westword Music Showcase winners.
We've sneak-peeked the award nominees, asked who we missed, and solicited your dream lineup. Now it's time to vote -- to see which bands will emerge from the 2009 Showcase as your favorites.
With the Showcase scheduled for Saturday, June 13 (with headliners Meese, Fluid, Built to Spill and A Place to Bury Strangers), ballots are due by noon on Monday, June 15. Winners will be announced once the hangover subsides, at some sort of event involving copious beer and high-fives.

I feel so stupid, but I'm confused about how it works. I thought the voting was for who people wanted to see at the showcase, then whoever people voted for would get to play it? But now I see that the ballots are due 2 days after the event. Are all the bands that were nominated playing the showcase and the voting is for Best Of?
Thanks to anyone who can clarify for me, I'm a bit embarrassed to be asking.
Thanks to Westword for putting this on every year. This has got to be one of the best towns in the country for music right now!
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 23 2009 @ 5:42PMYou have some people in the wrong catagories as well as missing catagories. First of all, The Piggies are more of a Modern or Alternative Rock band. And Motorhome is more Alt Country/Rock.
Speaking of Alt Country, where is that catagory? It would be nice to vote for Slim Cessna's Auto Club, The Hickman/Dalton gang, Railbenders, etc. After all these are some of the best acts in Northern Colorado.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 23 2009 @ 6:29PMGuns n rosa parks needs to be added! They've been back together for over a year, they are easily the best HC band in Denver. All those bands you have listed under hardcore are fucking wiggers. Word!
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 23 2009 @ 9:53PMThe online voting is to determine who will win an Westword Music Showcase award, which will be presented at an awards ceremony following the showcase, typicall a few weeks after the event. In terms of who performs, we have a finite number of slots, which will be filled by select artists appearing on the ballot. Feel free to weigh in on the other blog post with who you'd like to see perform at the Showcase.
Posted On: Thursday, Apr. 23 2009 @ 11:30PMBlack Lamb isn't what it used to be.
Under the Drone hasn't played in a year
Krakatau is a cover band now.
Who picked the bands for this category?
Not a hater, I like all those bands but really guys? Keep up with the times.
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 10:44AMDave H,
I didnt know if you saw this so Ima post it again on this more recent post...
Dave,
Do you guys realize that there is a group in Boulder called Audible Audities, and that ever since the Audible ABILities changed their name to that, they have been gettin recognition ONLY because people think they are the Audible Audities?? Which is a doper group from Boulder...
I just wanted to point that out to make sure Audible Abilities didnt get nominated because you thought they were the Audible Audities. I can only imagine how the Audible Audities feel getting passed over for stuff cuz some group decided to copycat their name...
Hey DH - do bands that were nominated automatically get a performance slot for the showcase? When does the actual schedule get released?
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 2:22PMOnce again, thanks for the nomination!
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 4:14PMBOLDTYPE is great and you missed them?! Especially their bass player, he's a cutie! Great music and easy on the eyes, always a good combo.
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 5:17PMBOLDTYPE is great and you missed them?! Especially their bass player, he's a cutie! Great music and easy on the eyes, always a good combo.
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 5:17PMi'm really happy Ideal Fathers got a nod on the ballot! we're in good company, too! thanks, and good job nominating committee!
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 7:13PMBOLDTYPE is tragically skipped on the ballot?! Seriously some of these bands that are on here OPENED for BOLDTYPE and they aren't even on here? This must be corrected. If they aren't at least on the ballot this whole thing will be declared a sham and Westword will forever be known for it's lack of fidelity.
Posted On: Friday, Apr. 24 2009 @ 8:56PMboldtype sucks harder than anything has ever sucked before and sets the bar for sucking so high that no one will ever suck that bad for the rest of eternity. stfu.

Posted On: Sunday, Apr. 26 2009 @ 8:16AMUm, hello? No Boldtype? Those guys are without a doubt one of the best punk bands in town, if not one of the best bands in town period. Please show 'em some love!
Posted On: Sunday, Apr. 26 2009 @ 5:10PMWhy isint Boldtype up on the punk scene for us to vote for them. They should be up there for us to vote on them
Posted On: Sunday, Apr. 26 2009 @ 6:12PMSome of you seem to be too stupid to realize that it's so damn obvious what you're doing. Yeah, three or four posts in a row complaining about the same band not being punk and so on and so forth. It reeks of desperation. Maybe YOUR band didn't get nominated because you simply didn't put your best foot forward. maybe you're spending more time trying to be tough than trying to write some good songs. Maybe you should concentrate more on melody and less on phony bravado.
There are a ton of great bands in this town and just being nominated should be an honor. If you're not nominated this year, try again next time. But getting your handful of "fans" to post using phony names and rooting for your band just reeks of phoniness. And desperation. And THAT isn't punk rock, my friend.
My "dream team":
Get 3 Coffins Ready
Reno Divorce
The Getdown
Overcasters
Reverend Deadeye
King for a Day
66 Days
Black Lamb
Boldtype
Red Stinger
Primasonic
Redo
Thank you.
Posted On: Sunday, Apr. 26 2009 @ 8:26PMHey, where's Boldtype! They are the best punk around. Would be criminal not to include this band.
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 8:07AMBoldtype is the best punk band around, their music is awesome....WESTWORD missed one of the best bands around.
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 9:09AMI vote the alan alan baird project. Isn't those guys in Denver when they were passing out free CDs. Normally I would smile and throw it away but they came off really nice. So I spun the disk and it sounded great. I am now a full time fan and I'm here to do my part. Rock on boys
The Alan Baird Project
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 9:49AMI saw alan baird project with breathe carolina. Didn't think they would really fit. But they did what they do best. Appealed to any crowd and rocked the socks off every 16 year old in the house haha.

Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 9:56AMWould love to see the Allen Baird Project.
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 10:40AMIf you haven't heard the Alan Baird Project, you are missing out--the songs are so original, and the music is incredible. Great stage presence and deserving of attention!!!!
Posted On: Monday, Apr. 27 2009 @ 12:22PMTHANKS for nominating those sad shoegazers from FELL.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 9:10AMJesus Christ! Bold type and the Kyle gas project I mean Alan weird project!spamming on every blog gives the impression of a cheesy teen highschool battle of the bands compititon.I don't mean to be THAT GUY but if you really had that many fans why would you want to or even need to be on the showcase? I love Denver music and I'm sure you guys are talented but please put in work and get noticed that right way.not buy cheating. Its obvious.
Posted On: Tuesday, Apr. 28 2009 @ 9:18AMthe hardcore section is lacking hardcore
I see Crooked Ways, Bankrobber and then a bunch of slow palm muted stuff.
Fresh Breath Committee!!! and Catch Lungs for MC!!
Posted On: Wednesday, Apr. 29 2009 @ 8:27AMThanks to Brian Curran for the word up. In my opinion, the Westword showcase is something to strive for to be a part of but thats up to Westword, not the bands or fans. Don't use this board to complain. I love Boldtype and wish that they were a part of it. I wish Redo was a part of that list as well but neither band is. So, we'll keep working out asses off until we do.

Thank you to everyone who voted for us! And yes, we did post on our myspace that you could vote for us as many times as you want. But the rules never said anything about that, so we figured the more the merrier. Turns out Westword didn't even count the repeat votes from the same IP address anyway...so no harm, no foul.
Sorry if you think that the way we went about getting on the ballot was "high school battle of the bands"-ish, but we are willing to promote our band in every way possible. Including this crazy thing they call "the internet". I don't know, I guess a lot of people are using it these days. But that's what a band has to do to get noticed these days. And it clearly worked!
I want to congratule all the bands that made it, and even the bands that didn't make it. Colorado has so many great and talented bands, I am pleasantly suprised at almost every show I go to. Another thing I love about the Colorado music scene is how nice all the bands are. There aren't very many egotistical bastards in the scene, which I know is surprising, but true.
But honestly, don't hate on bands. If you don't like the music, don't listen to it. Pretty simple. Find a band that you do like, and listen to them. There are plenty of great bands in Colorado to choose from.
Again, thank you to all the people who REALLY voted for us. Especially you Wayne Gretzky :)
Posted On: Saturday, May. 30 2009 @ 12:00AMThis is So yesterday...
But, it's RARE that I get a chance to catch-up!..
Firstly: "wannabecritic": Your comment is founded, but, alas defies logic.. Of Course BL isn't the same, We are a COLLABORATION that writes, plays, does MUSIC as much as we can... We can't change our name every-time our song-list changes, and, other directions are pursued...We couldn't give a fk less, if WE are nominated/win/lose.. We appreciate it!
But, We wanna do songs WE like, for people that like those songs..
(And to comment on Krakatau, Under The Drone? Both have done, and do, amazing music... And, wether-or-not they gig enough, do enough, to satiate your criteria, not a question...)
After reading this 3 month old thread, I am humbled. There are SO MANY GREAT BANDS in CO... I hope the bands that don't get any "award" know that it don't mean dick...
Not Another Dollar Will it Make You, Not Another Song Will It Inspire In You... It Is What It Is.
Just Play Music, and Love That...
God's Blessings,
Hags & BL
