Al Hood releases new CD, stakes claim as Denver's busiest jazz musician
Al Hood has a very crowded agenda. The trumpeter teaches fulltime at the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music in addition to contributing to a slew of ensembles, including the Denver Brass and the Ken Walker Jazz Sextet. Somehow, though, he also found time to record a new CD entitled Just a Little Taste: Al Hood Plays the Writing of Dave Hanson. It's a creamy, elegant collection featuring tunes by jazz talents like Benny Golson ("I Remember Clifford") and Lee Morgan ("Ceora"), as well as a Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut ("If I Loved You") and even "Pure Imagination," from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The playing is smooth and impeccable -- an advanced course in the art of trumpet from a player who can do as well as teach.
Of course, he can play live, too. He appears with the Denver Brass tomorrow on the University of Denver campus -- one of around ten dates through the Telluride Jazz Festival in June. Check out his schedule after the jump.
