Record Store Day preview: The MC5 will be kicking out the jams tomorrow

The MC5.

Plenty of amazing seven-inch singles will be available at Twist & Shout for Record Store Day other than the ones we've featured thus far in April -- stuff by Sublime, Taking Back Sunday, Tom Waits, Magnolia Electric Company, the Pretenders, the Jesus Lizard (a pack of nine singles, believe it or don't) and many more. For me, though, the big one is "Kick Out the Jams"/"Motor City is Burning" by the MC5. Packaged in a duplicate of the original picture sleeve, the 45 will be available for the first time at a standard retailer since 1969. This is the kind of item that makes supporting your friendly neighborhood independent record store even more fun tomorrow than it is the other 364 days of the year. See you there.

Note: Record Store Day is an annual event honoring independent record stores -- a onetime retail staple that's becoming an endangered species. In an effort to preserve this important cultural resource, dozens of artists are lending their support to this year's bash on Saturday, April 18, by issuing exclusive material, including loads of unique seven-inch singles, that can only be found at retailers such as Twist & Shout, 2508 E. Colfax -- ground zero for the celebration in Denver. Each weekday between now and then, we'll feature a different 45 that's sure to make your collection cooler. Learn more at the Record Store Day website or the Twist & Shout home page.
