Britney Spears: a tribute

Hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement of Denver's finest hip-hop acts paying tribute to the finest in that genre's storied history, The Denver Art Rock Collective is paying tribute to the musical mastery of the one and only Britney Spears.

Come again, now? Yes, that is right. Saturday, June 20 at the Toad Tavern, the likes of the Inactivists, the Skivies, the Mourning Sickness, the Trembling Earballs and Action Friend are tackling the highlights of Spears's oeuvre -- the musical oeuvre, that is, not the crotch-flashing, head-shaving, K-Fed-marrying part of her career. Sounds like a pretty crazy proposition to us, too, but if anyone can pull it off, it's that group of musical wingnuts (I mean that in the best possible way). Hell, if nothing else, the press release itself is a minor masterwork of satire (erm, I think that's satire). See for yourself after the break.

Britney Spears

Amid the thousands of tons of ink that has been written about her over the years; about the controversies and meltdowns, kids and K-Fed, head-shavings, baby-jugglings, public-flashings, court-proceedings etc.; there is one thing has appeared to go unnoticed. The whole reason she's famous to begin with. Her music.

Much like Brian Wilson or Wesley Willis, Britney Spears may be completely nuts, but she has funneled her inner demons into some of the best music made in the last forty years. While it is doubtful that Ms. Spears's contribution to the history of western music will ever be fully realized in her lifetime, as her status as a pop star continues to declines she is rapidly becoming a cult figure. There is a small but astute selection of individuals, and not just that nut under the blanket on YouTube, that realize that Britney Spears belongs alongside Billie Holliday, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin as one of the major talents in the entire canon of American Music.

There are a few brave soles who truly treasure the genius of Britney Spears's work, from the raw youthful prodigy displayed in her early masterpieces like "Baby One More Time" and "Oops I Did It Again" to the dark inner turmoil displayed on the highly underrated Blackout CD, to the mature complex sophistication of her latest magnum opus, Circus to the sage like wisdom that the future of Britney Spears hold for us. And in honor of those with the foresight to appreciate the master's work, The Denver Art Rock Collective will be presenting A Tribute To The Musical Genius of Britney Spears at the Toad Tavern on Saturday June 20th, beginning at 8 p.m.

The Toad Tavern, a rock 'n' roll nightclub in the middle of the suburbs of Littleton is a symbolically apropos choice to represent the sweet outer layer, and multitudes of depth hidden beneath that all of Ms. Spears's music has demonstrated. As this is a special and spiritual evening, the proceedings will be presided over, and blessed by, the Reverend Guy Marvel. While there were many great acts vying for a spot on the bill, five of the best chosen to help spotlight the more undiscovered rare pieces in Britney's oeuvre. Starting at 8, will be the original Denver band, The Mourning Sickness, followed at 9 by the original Denver band, the Skivies. At ten, original Denver band, Action Friend will take the stage. Eleven O'clock will see the original Denver band, the Trembling Earballs take the stage. And wrapping the evening will be a performance by the Inactivists, an original Denver band.

Be there, or be forced to tell your grandchildren about how you missed the opportunity of a lifetime to witness a true genius unfolding.
