Why would promoters/venue owners/and these highly bankable acts put on free city concerts when they'd all make more performing at the clubs?
A) Something like this (may) work in Salt Lake because there's really no established channels for touring artists. Thus, in SLC, it makes sense for the city to step in and provide resources.
B) Something like this works in Austin and New York because bands get invaluable exposure through Austin City Limits, Summer Stage, etc. Not to mention they can play these high profile "free" events, and then play a sold out gig at a club the next night--in the same city. Not sure if this would be the case in Denver.
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 4:22PMGreat points all around. Just the same, how cool would it be to have a free summer concert series like this in Denver.
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 4:33PMI discovered this concert series about a year ago when Josh Ritter & Andrew Bird were sharing a bill. I contemplated getting in a car and driving over the rockies...then gas hit $4. Oh the summer of '08.
I think this would work in Denver, as the act could hop to Boulder or Fort Collins for the next night or previous evening...play a smaller, intimate gig. There are enough great, intimate venues in this state that the concert series could even partner with one. Automatic promo for the venue and the artist's show there.
I asked this same question when Iowa announced the 80/35 festival in Des Moines. I live in Ft. Collins, & there's no reason FC couldn't sustain a festival on a smaller scale than the Mile High...and that doesn't just appeal to the champagne drinkers like New West Fest.
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 4:35PMHave Westword put it on for next summer, I'm sure it's possible to make it happen local. Just a matter of sponsorship, ect.
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 4:41PMYo yo,
Why you gotta hate on SLC Mr. Knowitall?
SLC actually has a great music scene and amazing touring bands that come through all the time, don't get it twisted.
These concerts don't happen because there isn't anything else going on, we just happen to have a City Arts Council that kicks ass!
Most of these bands head to Denver after anyway, so you're welcome! :)
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 4:43PMDear Mr. Knowitall,
With sincere regards I regret to inform you that Kong is gonna stomp on your house you lousy hater. I be comin wit da skip snap scallwag mark ass trick bing bong zingity zong styles and I can shoot flames out my mouth too.
BTW, SLC has Denver's number any day of the week, and a family of discordians that go huge 8 days of tha week. Plus our Arts Council is one of the best, if not the best, in the country. Dog Bless Sirius, i'm out.

My question would be who actually is underwriting these shows?
Oh wait... yeah upon looking at the website there are 16 corporate sponsors and 7 media sponsors. Anything can be free with the right amount of corporate sponsorship.
The bands I assure you are NOT playing for free and probably garner their regular rates. There is someone paying for the concerts, I promise you. I congratulate the Salt Lake City Arts Council for making a popular music series happen there. I agree with you Dave H... we should have something like this in the Denver Metro! Don't you know someone? Certainly you must know someone!
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 6:02PMI'm not sure if Mr.Knowitall was really taking a stab at SLC, but just stating that we do have more fest's and such here. Thus, a place like SLC might be a place where there aren't the number of big shows per year as here. That is not a dis on SLC, it's just numbers.
YES, there only needs to be someone to pay for it. Bottom line. Sponsorships or whatever, obviously the bands listed don't play for free.
For the record, I'll take the Denver scene any day over SLC. Go Denver. Oh wait, you are already going baby! Ummm...hells yeah.

Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 6:42PMLet's get it done Denver! I travel all over the country as a touring musician and Denver is one of the only cities that doesn't do this for free... silly. The bands make great money with their merch and get the best exposure you can find since there is no ticket price. It's a win/win for the bands and the music fan.
Posted On: Monday, Jun. 22 2009 @ 6:49PMIt is just plain untrue that SLC has less big shows than denver.
Let's start with the urban lounge (comparable to our own larimer lounge or hi-dive) who's bill line up this year holds huge names such as Akron Family, Magnolia Electric Co. and Dinosaur Jr. These are bands that we have to go to a big (often clear channel owned) theater venue to see when SLC gets to see them in a locally owned little bar the night before we see them.
And then there is the world famous all ages Kilby Court. Most of the bigger names that pass through Denver clubs like Larimer Lounge or Hi-Dive play the night before in SLC at Kilby Court in a much more intimate setting often alongside the kilby court camp fire!
And don't get me started on SLC bands. For every one *up and comming/next big thing* Denver band you can name I will give you links to 5 SLC bands that are just as good.
Nothing against Denver. We have a great thing here. But since it is a cultural island here (8 hours to the next major City) people in Denver tend to pat themselves on the back too often with out even knowing what is going on in the next town over.
And yes the bands at those free festivals do get payed quite well.
So basically, after all the silly rhetoric and proverbial links to what we can all find on the web - what everyone is saying is that yes, we do need free shows of this caliber in Denver, for free. I love the art in this town and I'm ecstatic, probably more so than anyone, that we have established ourselves in that community - however - 2 million dollars on a statue in the park next to the convention center? I won't even mention the annual upkeep fees for cleaning the brown paint off their taints every time a juvenile thinks that is funny and original.
Long story short - that money would be better spent at a free concert series. No shit they get paid - but not as much as you'd think. I'm with you Dave, let's make it happen.
Posted On: Tuesday, Jun. 23 2009 @ 1:57PMTechnically, Fort Collins does a smaller version... just once a summer. Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest. It's 2 days and 3 nights of live music and it's all FREE. There are two big headliners, this year is Melissa Etheridge (on Saturday) and Ozomatli (on Sunday). The cool thing is that the rest of the festival is filled in with all Colorado acts of all genres.
