A first look at 3OH!3's "Starstrukk" video

• @ Sean A.M. you know re-reading what i posted earlier makes me feel like a dick. didn't need to make my point so harshly.. sorry to come off like an asshole. i think you made valid points, i'm just not that interested in what makes them tick and all that. it is interesting how a spelling mistake can actually make an entirely different point. no bad vibes your way either man. all g. peace.

• &#64; Strange Powers:<br> Sorry about that; I should have thought twice about the way I worded that, as I actually agree with the points you made and am far from trying to convince anyone to "appreciate" this "band". I type pretty quickly as well and am no stranger to making mistakes of the same kind, if not just totally missing the semantic-clarity train altogether. Spell-check is not the culprit though; words are just something that interest me.<p> Anyway, no ill will intended; I just thought it was a funny misappropriation, but I failed to expand on why "parity" was also kind of appropriate. My bad.

• &#64; Sean A.M. i understand your need to defend your earlier post and make some sort of nerdy point about the music industry but... i just really don't care. nothing you have to say about the band is going to make me appreciate them, or anyone else for that matter. people who don't like it, don't like it. they don't care why... you going to tell me how i shouldn't dislike LMFAO now or the same reasons? you have way too much time on your hands to go spell checking people and then referencing the word in place. dude i type 75 wpm. I don't care if i spell shit wrong, so why do you? nor do i have time to get in some sort of stupid debate over why they suck. I didn't like them before they became successful either... so chill your ego and relax the dome for a minute. this conversation is played out like 10 minutes ago.

• Sure, they were a joke at first, but then they became the joke. It's the same with Nirvana. Why do you think Cobain shot himself? It had as much to do with chronic physical pain as it did with the fact that he saw the music he crafted -- music made to rail against the corporate mediocrity machine -- being embraced, endorsed, and reproduced by the same powers he pitted himself against.<br>Whoops. *bang!*<p> Genuine? I'm sorry; they're on tour with Katy Perry.<p> "Parity rap"? That's cute, but I don't think you're talking about the symmetry property of physical quantities or processes under spatial inversion, an indicator regarding whether a number is even or odd, or a legal principal.<p> Yes, 3OH!3 was a <i>parody</i> of popular rap music, but when you become a part of what you were railing against it makes your efforts pretty meaningless, and you become the joke. That's the whole reason bands like this get signed; the corporations disarm them with a big fat check, and then you suddenly can't say <i>everything</i> you wanted to say, or print those baby penises on the back of your record, because WalMart won't sell it, and that cuts into profit margins.<p> Also: making fun of the people who buy your music and the industry that makes it possible for profit makes you just as bad as those people. 3OH!3 isn't blowing any minds; their music actually subsists off the same idiocy that it parodies.

• &#64; DenverScener: they are not from Denver... They are from Boulder. They did a string of maybe 10 shows in Denver in 1.5 years and then 'blew up'. as far as 'hateraide' goes... please. I see you hate on a lot of stuff for barely any legitimate reason, however I posted a genuine opinion (which is shared by a LOT of musicians in the scene mind you!) so... hope your not lumping me into the hater-tot category. oh and um, p.s... since when is someone 'doing their thing' a legitimate reason to like them? quite literally everyone is 'doing their thing'. sounds like you are just defending them because one of those guys is your friend............

• Hateraide? Nice call out Dave! I got plenty of that...but not for 3oh!3. How can I not hate these guys you say? Well for 1) they have always been what they have been, no pretending, they have been super pop/white hiphop redunkulous since day 1 and 2) Like the Fray, etc. I could care less that their music is bubblegum sweet, only that they represent Colorado and Denver more importantly, the more acts that breakout, no matter how, the more attention will be on our fair city, for better or for worse. I am a huge dumper of hateraide - I do it to almost anything that I see deems it - however, in the case of 3oh!3 they doin their thing, for better or for worse, and they at least genuine, which is more than I can say for %70 of the acts in town.

• This group started out as total parody. I liked them at first before they were signed. then one day 93.3 was playing some shitty pop song by them i and was like dosnt everyone know these guys are a joke? it would be like if people started playing weird al on the radio and calling him a musician.

• For the record, I'm glad that artists from Colorado are out there and doing well. However, even though it is in my best interest as a local artist to "respect" these guys, especially given that one of these guys is the brother of a friend of mine, I have never liked this group. I think this new song is terrible. They were a joke? at first? parity rap? now they do legit 'amusing pop'? whatever pays the bills right? I don't hate on them as people or even as a group, I just think their music is terrible. I'm entitled to an opinion and I'll be the LAST one to 'dickryde' them because they are famous... In closing, if you think this group is a suitable candidate for 'putting CO on the map' then maybe you should question your motives... Flobots already handled that anyway, and whatever I might think about either of these groups, in comparison, Flobots are a REAL band and a far more suitable reference point for CO "hip hop"... does anyone still consider 3oh!3 Rap anyway??? KEEP IT REAL

• Anon: How often do "the masses" really pick art (or anything) of quality? American's in particular (and most of the "civilized" the world, thanks to us) have been conditioned to consume quickly and fashionably. Case and point: the most successful food chain ever is McDonald's; it's cheap, it's familiar, and it never, ever surprises you.<p> If you aim for the lowest common denominator -- or the highest part of the bell-curve -- you're not usually going to achieve anything special, but, thanks to our awful capitalist meritocracy, you'll probably become filthy rich (which most people think is pretty damn special).<p>If a concept is special/unique/mind-expanding, people usually need 10-20 years (or more) before they feel like it's okay to mention it or be into it without fear of being considered "weird" or "different" by "everyone else."<p> If you take Einstein's General Relativity for example (ca. 1916): most "average" people still don't understand the metaphysical implications of that theory; even scientists didn't start seriously discussing it publicly -- or using it seriously as part of their research -- until the 1970's.<p> When Miles Davis' "On the Corner" was released it received terrible reviews, but plenty of those critics revoked their initial responses about 10 years later, and now it's widely regarded as one of the most important records in jazz history, and a seminal album for hip-hop.<p> <p>When was solar power invented? 1860. "Fake over produced pop-hop" is what's selling right now (Kanye West, anyone?) and 3OH!3 are famous because someone thought they could make a lot of easy money off them.<p> As a musician in the Denver area I do not want to be known for mediocrity, but mediocrity is not only what <i>popular</i> music is about, but it's the very definition of popular (read: median, or average) consciousness. When everyone accepts that being uncomfortable can be a good thing -- when failure and uncertainty are seen as indications of growth -- global society will reinvent itself so quickly, and for the better, that "trends" like 3OH!3 will cease to exist. <p>How long does it take for society at large to alter the "median" consciousness? Ask the Romans; our society mirrors theirs quite a bit, and that was over 1500 years ago.<p> Good to hear that local boys are making it big off a craft we sort of share, but I never enjoy watching society celebrate itself exactly how it is -- resting on it's proverbial laurels -- over, and over, and over again.<p> I agree: there are too many artists from Denver making us look like we don't have anything original to say. Would that the artist who sold the most merchandise at a live show was Ron Miles, Greg Harris, or Ian Cooke, and not our echo of "fake over produced pop-hop."<p>

• 'Alot of local folks be like...' Hmmm. Be like. Hmmm. Okay, so perhaps 3OH!3 have drawn attention to Colorado but not good attention. Do the majority of musicians in Denver really want to be known for fake over produced pop-hop?
