Hey, DJ! Q&A with DJ Bedz
Every Friday we spotlight the hottest cats behind the decks in the MHC, grilling them to gain some insight on what it takes, exactly, to get the party rocking, to find out about their most treasured crate digging experiences and what they really think when we stumble up to them half cocked and ask them to play that new song by such and such -- you know, the one that goes... This week: DJ Bedz, the host of White Shadow Radio on Hot 107.1 and the official Denver Nuggets DJ. Read the full interview after the jump.
Name: Cassidy Bednark / DJ Bedz "The White Shadow"
Club night(s): Tuesday through Friday at La Boheme, Saturday at Sutra
Style(s) of music you spin: Primarily Funk, old school, hip-hop, R&B, & Top 40 - but I can spin a little mash-up, Rock, and House when needed.
So what's your story, in 100 words or less? I'm a white boy who grew up in Boulder with progressive parents and a urban music sensibility. After trying deejaying in college for fun I was able to land a series of gigs and turn music into a career. I've spun music in Denver Radio and been the Denver Nuggets Team DJ since 2002, as well as spending some time working for XM Satellite Radio and constantly knocking out mixtapes.
Name of a track you can't get out of your head: Alicia Keys - Doesn't Mean Anything
Name of an artist you're currently championing in your DJ sets: Can you play a set right now without Pitbull?
Musical mantra: It's ain't where you're from, it's where you're at.
Favorite DJ experience: Winning the Pepsi Superstar DJ Competition in 2008 was mind blowing. Just being part of the hype machine that a fortune 500 company can generate is humbling and surreal.
Worst request: Do you have "it's my birthday" by 50 Cent?
Worst club faux pas you've committed: Playing another DJ's mixtapes to kill time.
Most treasured vinyl score: I have a white label version of Gang Starr's "DWYCK" with the acapella...that's a dope record.
What other music-related projects are you currently working on? Always working on mixtapes, 100% of the sales from DJ Bedz mix CDs purchased at Independent Records go toward Safehouse Denver, an organization that helps protect women from domestic violence.
What's something happening in the local music scene that should be getting more attention? DJ Frank E taking over the world...he's recently produced tracks for Madonna, Flo Rida, Toni Braxton, Chamillionaire, & Cobra Starship, and he's just getting warmed up.
What elements would your fantasy club night entail? A night where you could get loose and spin music I love the whole time and have the entire crowd reciprocate the energy and love the music as much as I do.
Question we didn't ask you but you often ask yourself: What happened to the days when people would go to the club with the intention to dance?
Next time we can see you spin: M-F on Hot 107.1 FM (DJ Bedz Mix @ 6), you can hear "White Shadow Radio" on Hot 107.1 Denver and 96.1 The Beat Colorado Springs on Saturday nights, you can hear me at the Pepsi Center for the next Nuggets home game, or at one of my aforementioned club nights. Radio Bums get er' done!
