Meet Zach Heckendorf, a high school junior who's quickly moving to the head of the class

Categories: Tip Sheet

Being a junior in high school is all about experiencing things for the first time -- your first girlfriend, your first kiss, your first car. But seventeen-year-old Cherry Creek High School junior Zach Heckendorf is clearly not your typical high schooler. While his peers are still trying to figure out what the hell they're going to do when they grow up, Heckendorf's already doing it.

The highlights of his junior year have thus far included opening for Tea Leaf Green at the Ogden, the John Butler Trio at the Fox Theatre and a slot warming up for the much hyped new band One Eskimo at the Soiled Dove a couple of weeks ago for KBCO's invite-only show -- all gigs he played at the personal invitation of the folks at AEG Live.

Heckendorf no doubt captured the promoter's attention with his breezy, hip-hop-inflected delivery and his funked up acoustic guitar chops, both of which recall Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz. And the young singer-songwriter's parade of good fortune continues this week. On Thursday, May 6, he's due in KBCO's legendary Studio C, where he'll record a session that will not only be broadcast this Sunday, but is also slated to be released on a future KBCO Studio C compilation. The future indeed looks bright your the young Mr. Heckendorf.
