An encore screening of Soulz of the Rockies slated for this Friday

If you count yourself a fan of hip-hop culture -- particularly Colorado hip-hop -- Soulz of the Rockies is an absolute must-see. Can't remember the last time I've been so energized by a film, any film, much less a local one. But Soulz of the Rockies is deep. The documentary, produced by Musa, is as reverent of Denver's rich hip-hop history as it is informative. I learned more about the nascent days of local hip-hop in the first half-hour than I'd even realized existed -- and I lived through those days!

A parade of local legends are interviewed and represented -- Big Jon Platt, Al Your Pal, Brother Jeff, Bumpy Chill, Kingdom, Mr. Magic, Legion of Doom, High Society, DC Spinmasters, Deuce Mob, Don Blas, Kingdom, Rie Rie, Billy Jean -- way, way too many to even list. For the benefit of those who didn't make it out to the screen and weren't lucky enough to get your hands on a copy of the DVD, there's an encore screening slated for this Friday, July 23 at Starz Film Center, with two showings offered at 7 and 9 p.m.
