Suburban Home puts out a free mix tape in time for its 15th anniversary

We've got some good news and we've got some bad news. The good news is, Suburban Home Records just released a new mix tape, which the Denver-based label is calling Someone's Gonna Die. The bad news is, well, there isn't any. But there is more good news: It's free. All thirty tracks of it.

Spurred by I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House's new album, The Sounds of Dying, Someone's Gonna Die kicks off with two tracks from that album and then segues into songs from label artists like Look Mexico and Colorado's own Drag the River, along with older tracks from such luminaries as Townes Van Zandt and Hank Williams, Jr. Surburban Home also solicited non-label artists to submit tracks they thought would fit -- one that made it is "End of the Burning Moon" from Oblio's Arrow, another local favorites.

Track selection, which mostly centers around the apparent overarching theme of death and dying, is pretty inspired. Consider, for example, lining up back-to-back yet compellingly dissimilar versions of "Postcards and Apologies" -- first a cover by I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House, then the original from labelmate Two Car Garage. We like it.

Unlike previous entries in SH's Mix Tape series, this one won't be offered in hardcopy -- the release is digital-only. Dickerson noted that that approach offered two big advantages: The bigness and the freeness.

If you dig what you hear, mark down in your datebook that the compilation comes in advance of Suburban Home's fifteenth anniversary, which the label will celebrate September 10, 11 and 12 at 3 Kings Tavern with performances from many of the artists featured on the disk, including Drag the River, Two Cow Garage and I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House.
