Saturday: J Phlip at Casselman's
Raised on a steady diet of Chicago house music as a kid growing up in Champaign, Illinois, Jessica Phillippe emerged as one of the most in-demand underground female DJs over the past few years. Also known as J. Phlip, Phillippe studied engineering at the University of Illinois before relocating to San Francisco, where her funky, ass-shaking production work came to the attention of Dirtybird label boss Claude VonStroke.
She has since released a number of well-received singles on the highly influential imprint, and parlayed her success with Dirtybird into a residency at San Francisco's notorious, all-day-long afterhours club, The Endup.
Currently taking a sabbatical in the techno Mecca of Berlin, J. Phlip continues to rock dance floors worldwide with DJ sets that run the gamut, from San Francisco-style house and tech-house to banging techno, with a sizeable dose of booty house thrown in for good measure.
She stole the show at Beta on the Forth of July last year, playing alongside Dirtybird and Mothership heavyweights VonStroke, Justin Martin and Maetrik -- and looked damn sexy doing it, we might add -- although the talented DJ/producer is hardly getting by on looks alone.
Tomorrow night at Casselman's, J Phlip is slated to be joined by THREE, DJ Laura, ISHE, Jamie Kent and Garrick Michael. Show 21 plus. Doors at 9 p.m. Tickets range from $10-$40.
