Tonight: The Dead Kenny Gs at the Fox Theatre
Do the Dead Kenny Gs exist as the antithesis of Kenny G's existence? Absolutely. This is what makes them awesome, of course, beyond the simple fact that a band name like that sums up how the general listening public in 2011 probably feels about Kenny G -- if they feel anything about him at all. Spitting out frothy, jammy free jazz in short, consumable spurts, the DKGs are a trio that happily defy and scramble genres.
Creating shaky stacks of drums, bass, saxophones and xylophones and mixing it all up with manic vocal outbursts, these expert musicians can go from sounding uniformly tight to appearinghaphazardly novice. But it works well for the Dead Kenny Gs, whose diversity has put them on stage with acts from Primus to Stanton Moore. This show is all-ages, and tickets are $8-$12. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and the show begins at 9.
