Win Bright Eyes prize pack, including merch and a pair of tickets to the Fillmore show

Categories: Contests
While the correct answer (as evidenced below) appears to be endlessly debatable, the answer we were looking for is Norman Bailer. Congrats to Kyle Bassett, the winner of the Bright Eyes prize pack. Everybody else: Thanks for playing!

Bright Eyes has sure come a long way since we saw him open up for the Gloria Record up in Boulder at Club 156 sometime in the late '90s. Back then, Conor Oberst was awkward kid with a guitar slung over his shoulder singing awkward songs with a tentative voice. Since then, of course, he's grown into a celebrated songwriter with enough magnetism to fill an arena.

On June 3, Bright Eyes is due at the Fillmore with Jenny and Johnny, and not only do we have a pair of tickets with your name on them, but they come in a nifty prize pack that includes a signed piece of vinyl, a CD of your choice and a T-shirt, all of which you'll be able to redeem at the show. To win, comment below with the moniker that Oberst first made music under, and we'll pick a winner at random next week. (Be sure to include your actual email address in the appropriate field, so we can contact you if you win.)

since a moniker can mean "personal name" or "nickname" this is a bit of a trick question.

So Conor Oberst was firstThen Normal Bailer

OK, since I'm bored and I like making Emo kids cry, lets dissect the question:"the moniker that Oberst first made music under".  Obviously he made music before he used a "moniker", the question isn't what was his name when he first made music, or what name was on the first album he made....so everyone that guessed Conor Oberst you're wrong and you're welcome, please re-submit with another email address.

According to everything on the interwebs, Norman Bailer which later became the Faint was his first band, so if you guessed Commander Venus, you're also wrong.

Now let's discuss "moniker"- slang  a person's name or nickname. This is where I run into problems, moniker is a nickname for 1 person, such as Mark Twain and I have never heard it used or seen it defined as a band name which would make everyone guessing here wrong.

Anyone know any pet names his mom or brother gave him when he started singing/playing guitar?  Sweety, punk ass..... I really have no idea.  I am hoping that Moniker was just used incorrectly and the answer is Norman Bailer...final answer.

Conor Oberst for his first two recordings, then The Faint for an album, then Commander Venus for the next two.

Hmm ... .well, it doesn't say the post can ONLY mention his first moniker ... and since there's some confusion, I'll include in my post: Conor Oberst, Desaparecidos, Norman Bailer, The Faint, Commander Venus, Park Ave., Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Bright Eyes and the Monsters of Folks .... that should cover me!

Conor first released music under his OWN name - Conor Oberst - his first album was "water" released on the label he created with his brother - Lumberjack Records.

well "Water" was self-released as Conor Oberst's first tape in '93, and then he played with Norman Bailer (the Faint) for a minute before forming Commander Venus.

so i guess my answer is trick question??
