Just a bit ago at 1STBANK Center, on stage at KTCL's Not So Silent Night, Alf, the host of Locals Only, announced the finalists for the station's annual Hometown for the Holidays promotion. After sorting through all the submissions, with a panel of local luminaries weighing in last week, the Channel 93.3 staff narrowed it down to twelve finalists (evidently, there was a four-way tie for ninth place). Page down to see who made the cut.

Well, it doesn't hurt that bands on this list throw house parties that 93.3 staff frequent and even dj from time to time.  It's a pretty tightly knit circle that can be hard to break into, but I digress!  This is a pretty decent list of the best bands that represent the "93.3 sound".  Most of these bands are doing cool things and pushing themselves musically, which I can appreciate.  There's a few on here though that just remind me of the "nickelback sound".  You know, the "I only sound good in the studio/I'm doing this ONLY for the chicks/Don't these pants make my junk look bigger/Rock and Roll doesn't have to be music, just loud noises" sound.  Not my cup of tea, but I guess that's why we are all different!  And honestly, I love the Heyday, but I thought they had broken up by now.  But they do deserve a fourth chance I suppose.

And no, I'm not in a band that got shafted this year or anything like that (although I am a musician).  Just calling it how I see it.

Beat Noir is the best band in Denver. Listen and you won't regret it!!

Yikes, didn't mean to sick the lynch mob on me...last time i make an observation and post it on this blog.  BTW, i'm not in any band or have friends in bands.  Just an over the hill avid listerner of KTCL...good luck to the bands.  Now i'll retire to my opinion-less spot in cyberspace.

I think it's a great list!  I'm always excited to see what bands make the cut and even more excited to hear what song they submitted and how the recording sounds.  It's a great way to support and promote local music on a larger scale.  Harryjerry, have you really followed the Top "10/12" list every year (since there are always new/surprise/breakout bands on it) or are you jaded that your band (or your friends band) did not get in?  I think it speaks volumes for the local music scene and am very happy that KTCL steps up and puts local music out there to a large radio audience.

For those who wonder or care.

* The submissions are voted on by a group of people made up of the on-air staff, several people who work in the "scene" in one capacity or another (print media, venues, etc), and a few randomly selected station listeners.

* Our basic mindset is "Is this a good song to put on our station?  Will it be a good fit?"  Given this, it's perhaps not surprising that modern rock bands with pop sensibilities tend to do well on a consistent basis.

* Bands that win either of our yearly local music promotions (Big Gig and Hometown for the Holidays) are no longer eligible to enter either one.

* There are several bands on the list that have reached the top tier before - most notably the Heyday, making their fourth appearance.  Six of the top twelve, however, have never been in the top tier before.  (Seven if you count Monroe Monroe, as I think the Legendary Beep Beeps made it in one year.)

Wow, looks like the same list as last year, and the year before that, and the year before that...  Are the bands who make the cut the only ones on the voting panel?

Beats Noir is not part of the 93.3 scene and has never played any house parties for KTCL.The band is really new and sounds good, so they got picked.

Or maybe they're some of the hardest working bands in Denver and that's why they constantly make the cut?
