YONNAS ABRAHAM @ THEORY + PRACTICE | 12/16/11
Yonnas Abraham unleashed the sex beast at Theory + Practice art gallery for the release of Sextape, and the display was spectacular. Yo unveiled the artwork for the project -- steamy photography by Peter Bishop featuring the MC's muse Cassie Nova -- and performed the pre-released tracks as well as the entire Sextape. Wearing a full suit and tie, Yo and his Sextape Ensemble pretty much rocked everyone's face off.

Joining forces with Bianca Mikahn, Catch Lungs, Jon Shockness and his BLKHRTS brethen, Karma and FOE, and backed by the Sextape Ensemble (Qknox, aka Jerod Sarlo, Hogans Daniel, Casey Sidwell and Chez Cheree Strong), Yo blew through his set with animalistic fury and artistic measure.

When Yo brought Mikahn on stage for a performance of "Round and Round," the place erupted, and the dance floor was packed with flailing bodies. Over the course of his set, Yo performed the entire record. Standout moments included the party-rocking "What Up Yo?" with Jon Shockness and the super-slinky "In the City."

Yonnas Abraham looking all sorts of dapper at his Sextape release party.

Opening the set looking dapper and poised, by the end of the night -- and the end of the record -- Yo had worked himself and the audience into a whirlwind, and the energy in the room was palpable. Even though most of the material was brand-new and being played for the first time, the crowd responded with the favor of familiarity and gave as much energy to Yo as he gave back. For her part, Cassie Nova was perched on a platform next to the stage jamming right alongside Yonnas for the entire set.

The band was killing it, and Yo was clearly having a grand time, as evidenced by the broad smile he broadcast as he powered through his set. Unsurprisingly, the MC was wildly impressive alongside Karma and Foe as they rocked "Pure Pitch Black" with the rowdy chemistry BLKHRTS has mastered. Overall, it was a beautiful display of art and imagery, and Yo gave a rousing delivery of each track, baring his soul to all in attendance.

What up, Yo?

CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK

Personal Bias: Who doesn't love a good Sextape?
By the Way: "Pure Pitch Black" is the track to check for.
Random Detail: Casey Sidwell, sir, you were jamming on that bass.

How can any of you jack offs criticize the "muse" when I am sure you haven't the slightest clue as to who she is as a person. her talents are most likely above and beyond your ability to write a constructive argument or critique. I'm pretty sure that if she is a friend of Yonnas's she is a multifaceted person.  Not to mention a very pleasant personable young lady. You just mad that you can't run up in her. She was a great addition to the show. I just wish she would have been naked in a box.

that first sentence kind of looks like "How can any of you jack off to the muse?" . To which my answer is I already have.

Do you really think referring to your fellow posters as "jack offs" is writing a brilliant argument? The problem perhaps is actually no one jacked off. If you're going to present a woman as a sex object for a sextape her "talent" should be making things sexy right? At least you agree that she should have been as promised, in a box.

It was absolutely sloppy and not what was promised. No glass box, the art should have been bigger and hung and the "muse" thing really didn't work. Yeah, the girl can show her tits on the internet, which I'm not impressed by, but clearly that's her only "talent". Also, only one microphone and a multitude of guest performers makes for kind of a cluster. It was raw, and awesome in that respect, but a few improvements could be made.

The "muse" couldn't dance worth a shit, not sexy just awkward.

Ok, I am going to guess that either this writer is a friend of the artist, or flat out was not at this show. I was though, and I don't know if it is common practice at Westword dot com to write flat out lies or if its a one time thing, because what I saw was some poorly rehearsed material in a collective space that looked like my friend Allen Moms garage sale basement. Seriously I was promised naked women in boxes, and art on the walls. What awaited was like a handful of pictures of that girl that was sitting on the hand all night, scattered on a table. The performance could have made up for the fact that the location sucked, but the fact that the band was mediocre at best didn't help the situation. I have seen Yonnas Perform many times and I think he is a talented artist, but stroking his ego on this one is just poor journalism and not going to help his future performances. If you were to take a copy of  the shows flyer and put it side by side with the performance they just don't add up. So Bravo Ru Johnson,  I never once saw the crowd Explode, except the few fights that broke out and the songs were poorly rehearsed I just can't stress that enough. I guess I don't need to though, this one will go down in the books as legendary, when it should be filed under the "needs improvement" section.

yeah, it was pretty sloppy and ramshackle and the art wasnt on the wall, but it was fun, ya know? i felt the collective energy in the room and a few times it did feel explosive. it was our FIRST performance and it was for our friends and the people who love our music. don't worry i know we need to tighten up, and we will, but i sincerely appreciate your feedback. i will say this, i have played countless shows where not one thing was off, and they rarely felt as good as that. it just felt good, and i had alot of fun. you have to take into account people have different perspectives on what make a good or great show, so to accuse the writer of lying is silly. Clearly that was HER opinion of the event. For the record though, i agree, we were sloppy and frankly, under-rehearsed. would i be happy with that performance under other circumstances? no. But it was a party for our fans, and it was fun! which is all it had to be. but hey, thanks for coming!

and the art and the music itself is fucking awesome, and i wish you could acknowledged that, but hey, you just want me to do better and i appreciate that! you care, clearly, which means the world to me!
