Saturday night: Haiti benefit show with In Due Time

Forget Wyclef -- local singer-songwriter and all-around badass Alicia Fall has been raising funds for Haiti (and, ahem, not squandering them) since March 2009, when she founded the social-profit organization Her Many Voices, which is dedicated to helping citizens in developing countries around the world. Specifically, Fall has her eyes on a village in Haiti, Trou ChouChou, and through Her Many Voices, she's providing clean water and sustainable energy for the village, one step at a time.

Since founding the organization, Fall has provided emergency and life-sustaining supplies to the villagers of Trou ChouChou, and she has an excellent grasp -- provided by the villagers themselves -- of the resources desperately required in the village. Engineer Wayman Carter is involved in an innovative and unprecedented water and energy project, and Her Many Voices has already helped Trou ChouChou build a much-needed community school with fourteen teachers and 357 students, from pre-school through high school.

But it's not all work and no play; on Saturday, December 17, Fall is hosting a family-friendly benefit concert starting at 7 p.m. at D Note, 7519 Grandview Avenue in Old Towne Arvada, with a $5 to $10 suggested donation instead of a cover charge. August on the Equator and Dr. Harlan's Amazing Bluegrass Tonic will be playing tunes, as will local funk/ska band In Due Time -- which will also be recording the set live for an upcoming album. There will also be live performance painting by Laurie Maves. And kids are welcome at the festivities; bring them for pizza and dancing, a perfect way to wear them out on a Saturday night. The ear and eye candy on the night's agenda will be more than worth your time and hard-earned dollars -- and after all, 'tis the season for giving to those less fortunate.

"The proceeds will go to helping to work with the women and children in Trou ChouChou," says Fall, "bringing education and resources to the village." So your money will be well spent.
