Michael Jackson, the King of Pop: Remembering the greatest performer of all time

Lauded as the greatest performer of all time, Michael Jackson was a dancing, singing, performing phenomenon, and we are not likely to see another performer of his caliber ever again. The life of Michael Jackson is well documented, his struggles, imperfections and sometimes bizarre behavior, but one thing that has ever been questioned is his knack for hitting a perfect pitch and every single dance step with precision.

Born Michael Joseph Jackson in Gary, Indiana, in 1958 to a family of musicians with his father Joe Jackson at the helm, young Michael emerged as the tiny frontman of the Jackson 5, a band comprised of his brothers and managed by their father Joe.

After first making his mark with the Jackson 5, Michael later embarked on an unsurpassed and virtually unparalelled solo career that earned him the title of the King of Pop. Up to an after his passing in 2009, Jackson is widely recognized as one of the most successful entertainers of all time. Cut from the same cloth as James Brown, a man he idolized, Michael learned to use his voice and impeccable dancing skills to paint glorious depictions of life.

His videos were commonly over the top: "Thriller," can still make your skin crawl, "Remember the Time," is one of Michael's greatest dance break downs ever, and "Scream," with his sister Janet Jackson was for some time, one of the most expensive videos ever produced. Almost every song was a hit. "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Human Nature," "Wanna Be Starting Something," the list goes on and on. Michael influenced every artist we love (Usher, Beyonce, OutKast, Justin Bieber -- don't act like it's not true) and even the ones we love to hate (Chris Brown).

Jackson has won a boatload of Grammy awards (he won eight in 1984 alone), tons of American Music Awards and a million other accolades. He also remains one of the most beloved international pop stars to grace a stage. Everyone impersonated Michael Jackson, whether with his famous one glove, red leather jacket or surgical dance moves. He belonged to so many of us in American culture. Jackson changed the game with his piercing falsetto and personable (if not, outlandish at times) charm and his influence will grow for years to come.

February has traditionally been the month when the contributions from, traditions of and historical facts about African-Americans are celebrated. In honor of Black History Month, Backbeat will be celebrating iconic figures in the world of black music.

Michael Jackson  deserves a category of his own.  His creativity and artistry will never be matched.

Even Elvis comes way behind MJ.

MJ  deserves the title The Greatest Entertainer of All Time... and THE KING.

Let's all face it - Elvis was Elvis because there hadn't been Michael Jackson yet at that time.

Thanks for this article. We/I cant agree more. Another interesting point is that Michael Jackson was/has been the only one real GLOBAL ICON, I mean, on all continents, all countries (except like North Korea), neither Elvis nor the Beatles have never achieved such global success and popularity like Michael Jackson does. The USA and UK are not the whole world, and journalists have to take seriously the worldwide impact of Michael Jackson, not only compare Michael as an American artist to other American aritsts... like ... Garth Brooks is the biggest selling artist in the USA, he has sold more albums than MJ and Elvis, but in fact, nobody knows him out of the USA..., but Michael Jackson is the most succesful artist worldwide... and you can ask whoever wherever who Michael Jackson is and almost anybody answers you, see the point?

All This and more. Its hard to define or describe or put into words Michaels impact on Music , his fans , and the world.. God hasnt created those words yet. And if he did.. He probably only shred them with Mike.. And when the time is right.. We will understand it all ... and Get it.

But one thing is very clear.. He will never be outdone, He set the Bar .. and he did it during a time when buying music took effort

Now as always, Michael stands alone, "On the Dance floor, In the round" His spotlight will never fade.
