Is One Direction ready for Saturday Night Live? More than Lana Del Rey, but less than Karmin

Update 4/12/12: Hot on the heels of its appearance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, One Direction has announced a date at the Pepsi on Tuesday, July, 24. Tickets on sale next Saturday.

One Direction will play SNL on April 7, but are the five boys ready for such an honor?
With a slew of odd choices for musical guests lately, it's not much of a surprise that Saturday Night Live has booked boy-band explosion One Direction to perform on Saturday, April 7. At this point, it's not a question of why -- as the group of male Brit heartthrobs is like a Justin Bieber five-pack that landed at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week with their debut album Up All Night -- but instead a question of at what cost.

To understand what we mean, consider SNL's most recent musical guests, including Lana Del Rey. Del Rey, a champion among the blogosphere, was the victim of overhype (who knew there could be such a thing in music) and her performance, as true-to-form Del Reyian as it was -- lifeless and all -- was critically panned by everyone who had fingers and a keyboard. The biggest criticism was that she performed on a stage that others would kill for without having yet even released her debut album, Born To Die.

Karmin: Nick Noonan and Amy Heidermann.

While pop duo Karmin was considerably more enjoyable to watch -- singer Amy Heidermann, with her awkward dance moves, came off like a hybrid of all the combined strengths of Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj -- the band still hasn't released its debut album. Again blog darlings, they were booked to perform due to their MASSIVE YouTube following, thanks to their tasty cover of "Look At Me Now" -- Heidermann gives Busta Rhymes a run for his money, believe it or not -- and "Super Bass."

While Karmin didn't perform any covers, Heidermann's on-stage persona did much of the heavy-lifting for otherwise unfamiliar, albeit uber catchy, pop songs. Karmin's experience performing live -- or before a camera, anyway -- served the band well, as Karmin so far has been the only music gamble that paid off for SNL this season.

February also saw the SNL debut of Sleigh Bells, whose album, Reign Of Terror, was rightly timed for a release three days after the live performance -- Sleigh Bells did SNL on Saturday, February 18; the album dropped Tuesday, February 21.

All acts considered, One Direction is in a bit of a Lorne Michaels-induced bind. While the band's album dropped well in advance of its performance -- One Direction only has one, um, "recognizable," if you could call it that, single in the States: "What Makes You Beautiful." Should the boys perform it without a hitch, they still have to worry about their second performance on the show. What song do they do? Inevitably, the second single from Up All Night, but who's to say it won't take as well with America.

Worse, "What Makes You Beautiful" has only hit the pre-teens and early teens of America -- do they watch Saturday Night Live in the first place? Are they even allowed to stay up that late? Booking a band on their prospective success within the over-thirteen demographic, much of the SNL viewership, is a big gamble for Michaels.

Nevertheless, the show would do well to take no more big gambles with the musical guests and stick to the tried and true musicians first -- for starters, how 'bout Bruce Springsteen? He just released a new album, you know. And if the show does insist on booking new, rising talent, a la Karmin, the honor of performing on Saturday Night Live should first go to Americans, not Brits. How about booking maybe fun. or up-and-comer Azaelia Banks?

I'm 19 and i love one direction. I don't think they only appeal to preteens. honestly, sometimes when my little sister watches their videos and interviews i hope she doesn't understand what they are talking about yet haha. but their music is good and they have a huge/devoted fan base. Real fans know all their songs and are able to sing along to their performances. I totally disagree with this article. Just because they originated in the uk doesn't mean american fans only know one song.

Uhg.. I hate people who think they're just for little kids..They don't want to be just that. Their music can be for anyone, but apparently they have more young fans. People forget they're 18-20 yr olds. They act like normal guys their age and they don't act squeaky clean for the kids. They show off their real selves and that's why they have lots of 18+ fans. I'm 21 by the way and a proud directioner!

I know of like 5 "pre teens" that know about One Direction. Their fan base is teenagers, who obviously can "stay up that late". Don't be so patronizing, they actually have talent, otherwise they wouldn't have placed 3rd on the X Factor. They aren't 5 Justin Biebers, they're great guys.

It's endearing to see a bunch of teen girls argue so fervently on behalf of a group they'll vehemently deny ever listening to in just a few years time.  Same thing as ten years ago, when all those other now has-beens had their 15 minutes of fame.  Life really does come full circle.

I am quite surprised by this article! I think Lorne Michaels is a genius for nabbing One Direction when he did. To anyone who pays attention to music, One Direction is exploding all over the globe, and has three hit singles, including the aforementioned "What Makes You Beautiful," as well as the very commercial "One Thing," and pop ballad "Gotta Be You." Not only will One Direction attract the coveted young (and easily persuaded) audience, which happens to be larger than just pre-teens, but they are also quite good at performing live. P.S. Any boy band Simon Cowell is behind has my blessing.

Um I'm a teenager and I LOVE them. They are incredibly talented, unlike most singers nowadays, and sound amazing live. And nO, their gorgeous faces, kind, funny, and witty personalities, and hot accents aren't the only reason they have millions of fans worldwide. :)

One Direction are very talented, and frankly, I was very disappointed with this article. The number of fans that they have is unbelievable, and they all know more than just one song. I sincerely believe that whoever wrote this article needs to update. We are no longer in the time that only  American musicians could run out or act in large stadiums and television programs to be successful. The One Direction came to realize their dream, and they are talented they are unable to do so. But yes, someone has to hate them for it.

You don't know what you're talking about. Fans know more than one song - have you not seen One Direction appearances in America? Really out of touch.

It clearly shows that you haven't done your research. Believe or not but they ACTUALLY have a lot of fans ranging from their late teens to mid 20s. One Direction have a different kind of appeal that Big Time Rush don't even have which is why they are doing so well. They don't try to be clean cut like other teen stars and openly talk about sex etc which is why they appeal to a lot of people. Two of the boys have publicly dates a 32 and 24 year old.Their song What Makes You Beautiful is currently #5 on US iTunes and will move up in the coming weeks and will be a huge hit. They are very talented boys and have great personalities. They boys are hilarious and if they do a skit that will be even better.

thats stupid in 17 and i love one direction and all my friends love their music. i know all there songs and i am american just because you think that they only appeal to 13 year olds doesn't mean they do. the boys are funny, relatable, and current. and believe me they will explode this summer with their tour which has been selling out in minuted worldwide.

Preteen and Early teen? I'm sorry but there are many... MANY fans that are well into their late teens and early twenties. ...i'm nearly 19 and love em'Have you ever seen what their fan base comes up with on twitter and other social networks?I mean, just search some of the things that trended on twitter on their birthdays. I would never consider "put your erection in my direction" on signs at their performances being preteen material...   Anyways, i do believe they will do quite well on SNL.
