Top 7 Results: Jessica Sanchez doesn't go home, thanks to the judges' save
Jessica Sanchez can thank J. Lo for saving her last night on American Idol after a surprising revelation that Sanchez, one of the stronger vocalists this season, had received the lowest number of votes from Wednesday's show.
Sanchez, whose take on Jazmine Sullivan's "Stuttering" was far from worthy of sending her home, didn't offer up much of a memorable melody -- and when she was up against the likes of Hollie Cavanagh taking on P!nk's "Perfect," easily the strongest performance of the night, she was bound to fare poorly.
Led by Jennifer Lopez's decision to use the judges' only save of the season on Sanchez, Sanchez will make it through to the next round, as will everyone else this week.
On the whole, the contestants did a good job with their picks for contemporary songs. Skylar Laine took up an acoustic guitar for Kellie Pickler's "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You" and, building on the strength of last week's performance, keeps getting better and better. Colton Dixon, who did the Skylar Grey version of "Love The Way You Lie," performed behind a piano. It was another Dixon performance -- full of Hot Topic-prime emotion and angst. Elise Testone, in the bottom three, also went to the piano for her performance of "You and I" by Lady Gaga -- good, if a little out of her vocal register.
Testone also performed Gotye and Kimbra's "Somebody That I Used To Know" with Phillip Phillips, who musically can do no wrong it seems. It's the second time the two have been paired together, and with much success.
For his solo performance, Phillips covered Maroon 5's "Give a Little More," and Joshua Ledet sang "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars. The latter was a good vocal match, but when it came to choreography, it all felt a bit awkward. Simply, Ledet is no Bruno Mars. By that same token, he's no Kelly Clarkson, either, as he joined Sanchez and Cavanagh for a group performance of her recent chart-topper "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)."
