Idol recap: Phillip Phillips stays consistent, Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh thaw out
It's down to the wire on American Idol now. On last night's show, each of the four remaining contestants brought out everything they had to be considered for the final three. No longer are any of the contestants resting on their laurels, except Phillip Phillips who stuck with his tried-and-true formula. Phillips took on Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" -- it wasn't spectacular by any means, actually feeling quite a bit safe, but he sounded great, even without hiding behind a guitar this week. The Idol audience, and especially the women, of course, loved it. He also did Damien Rice's "Volcano" with guitar in hand.
Hollie Cavanagh performed Journey's "Faithfully," backed only by piano and sparse instrumentation. Her usual iced-over stage persona felt more thawed last night -- it was a nice change for someone with so much vocal talent. There were even some Kelly Clarkson-sized Idol moments, when Cavanagh leaned to her right, belted the lyric "I'm still young" and had the wind machine blowing through her hair. Cavanagh also performed "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt.
Joshua Ledet did Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up." Unlike the others three contestants' slow -- or slower songs, in Phillips' case -- this one failed to showcase Ledet's vocal abilities, running a little below his register before the key change. Ledet also performed James Brown's "It's A Man's Man's Man's World," giving a much, much stronger performance.
Jessica Sanchez, however, did Etta James' "Steal Away," perfect for her register and a her personality, which, at least in last night's episode, seems to have also thawed out -- Sanchez was much more comfortable on stage and she worked the Idol crowd in a way only a finalist would. Sanchez's take on "And I Am Tell You I'm Not Going" also helped to seal Sanchez's fate -- she received a standing ovation from the judges. Expect to see Sanchez sail through to the next round during tonight's results show. As for the contestants, it's anyone's game.
