Five famous record collections and a look at their doomed (and almost doomed) fate

2. Pias Group
The Pias Group is the largest independent distributor in the U.K., working for dozens of record labels and film studios. Things were going well until Pias's North London warehouse was set ablaze during the riots late last summer. The warehouse was three stories high and had more than 60,000 square feet of space. It contained stock for labels like Domino, 4AD, Warp, Ninja Tune and more. Among the release-date casualties was the Arctic Monkeys, whose new single at the time, "The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala," couldn't be shipped to retailers because the stock had been in the warehouse.

Another that should have made this list was the tremendous collection amassed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar over five decades that was lost in total in a very unfortunate fire several years ago that destroyed his home as well.  The collection included a vast number of rare jazz LPs that in a number of cases were the only known ones in existence at that time.
