2Chainz had the crowd going bananas last night at the Ogden Theatre.

2CHAINZ @ OGDEN THEATRE | 9/17/12

The moment 2Chainz took the stage, it became very obvious why this show was moved from the Bluebird Theater to the Ogden at the last minute. When the ATL rapper finally placed the mike to his lips and dropped his verse from "Mercy," the crowd went absolutely insane as a music video played on an LED screen behind him. The B.O.A.T.S. (Based On A True Story) tour punched Denver right in the mouth, despite the rapper's declaration of the first rule of the tour: No fighting. Immediately following the opening verse of the hit song, 2Chainz rolled right into "Got One" and the show was officially under way.

As if he needed to remind anyone, just in case it escaped anyone's notice, 2Chainz took it upon himself to remind us that he is, in fact, from the trap. He also reminded us that he loves strippers, that he is still celebrating his birthday and there was just one other rule of the tour, and that was no flip phones allowed. As if on cue, as 2Chainz rapped through "Birthday Song," "I Love Dem Strippers" and "Turn up," the entire venue screamed in unison and many filmed with smart phones.

It never ceases to amaze how rappers can get away with rapping over their own pre-recorded vocals -- seems like it kind of defeats the purpose of the DJ -- but in those rare moments where 2Chainz would ditch the vocals, it was very apparent that his vocals were blaring out of the speakers. The guy can perform, though, and in addition to being able to work the crowd, he performs his set with relative ease while seeming to enjoy himself thoroughly on stage. Following "Birthday Song," 2 Chainz made overtures to several ladies in front.

"Supafreak" was an invitation for the aforementioned ladies to get sexy, at which point the grinding commenced on the packed tiers of the venue. This led into "I'm Different," which started to wind down the show for the night. The encore was really just an opportunity to burn a blunt on stage and snap some photos for his Instagram account; there was no real banging closer for the night.

CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK

Personal Bias: I saw 2Chainz when he opened for Drake at Comfort Dental, and this show blew that performance out of the water. It seems he's a lot more confident now.

Random Detail: People were throwing money all around -- cash everywhere.

By the Way: Prior to 2Chainz's set, Kid Vegas and Cap 1 delivered short sets. Kid Vegas played alongside DJ Bedz, rapping other people's songs, namely Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools (Drank)," and yelled "hey" a lot, while Bedz laid down some subtle scratching on the decks. Bedz killed it. Kid Vegas, not so much.
