Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano to perform with Denver tribute band again Friday at the Oriental
When the Dirty Femmes, one of Denver's more interesting tribute bands, returns this weekend for a show at the Larimer Lounge, they'll be joined by a very special guest. While Jen Korte always delivers a killer impression of Violent Femmes' singer Gordon Gano, at the Larimer she and her bandmates will be joined on stage by none other than the man himself, bending the physical laws of post-modernism by allowing tribute band and the progenitor on stage at the same time.
Following The Dirty Femmes' hi-dive performance last spring, a mutual acquaintance gave Gano Korte's phone number, after which he called and asked about the Dirty Femmes, which ultimately lead to this Friday's unlikely (and totally awesome) collaboration.
Violent Femmes frontman Gordon Gano.
"He called and was like, 'Hey, I just wanted to introduce myself," recalls Korte. "I thanked him for his contribution to music and what his album meant to me. He said thank you and asked to hear the music -- so I sent him some tracks from the live show."
After making loose plans to meet up again, fate had it that Gano would be in town during the Dirty Femmes show -- and the Femmes just happened to need a violin player, a role Gano was capable of filling. "He dropped in on one of our practices, and brought his fiddle. We just gelled and played together for a few hours. And then he's like -- I'll see you on Friday!"
Rumor has it that Gano will be performing with the Dirty Femmes not only at the Larimer Lounge this Friday, but with them during their show on Friday, November 2, when the outfit shares a bill with the all female AC/DC cover band, Hells Belles, at the Oriental -- though nothing is confirmed either way on this yet.
