Hip-hop and it still don't stop. This afternoon at 1 p.m., the inaugural Hip-Hop Legacy Literacy Conference kicks off with a screening of Ice-T's Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap documentary in the St. Cajetan's building on Auraria, and, tomorrow, the Sankofa Lecture Series welcomes its fall keynote speaker, MC Lyte, to Metro State University. And then on Friday, Crazy Legs of the Rock Steady Crew will also speak in the inaugural Hip-Hop Legacy Literacy Conference.

The legendary MC and scholar, who is currently the president of the prestigious LAC Recording Academy, is slated to speak about the current transformation of the female role in hip-hop, which is absolutely fitting, as she is one of the pioneers who garnered respect on a mainstream level for women in the genre. The lecture takes place in the Tivoli Turnhalle on Auraria at 7 pm tomorrow night. The event is free and the Keynote speech will be followed by a performance from MC Lyte with special guests Lady Wu-Tang in the Turnhalle at 9:30 p.m.

There will be cyphers with Crazy Legs and workshops during the three-day event, which is being headed up by the Department of African American Studies and MSU Denver. The lecture series is part of an ongoing project whose goal is to use hip-hop as a multi-disciplinary tool to interact with the community, teach and use the genre to "build bridges and not walls," says the chair of the program, Dr. B. Afeni McNeely Cobham, known affectionately as "Dr.MC." Visit the series's website to register and for more information.
