Quixote's True Blue: The new Jerry Garcia mural at 314 East 13th Avenue defaced overnight

UPDATE 11/14/12: All right, now this is just disappointing. As you can see from the photo above, sometime between our last update last night and this morning, some unscrupulous person(s) defaced the new Jerry Garcia mural on the east wall of 314 East 13th Avenue, the former home of Bender's Tavern and the current home of Quixote's True Blue. While many folks were clearly displeased with the fact that the iconic rendering of Johnny Cash that previously adorned the wall had been painted over (and expressed as much on Facebook), it's hard to imagine that even as upset as folks might've been that someone would willfully vandalize someone else's artwork -- especially considering that marring the current mural isn't going to bring the original one back. If you haven't been following this saga, continue on to read our original items and to see more photos.

There are people in music who have a legacy and importance that goes beyond fans of their music. Jerry Garcia is not such a person.

You would think that they would have fixed the bar up first, seeing that the booths are still falling apart, instead of immediatly painting over Cash. They haven't even painted over where it says Benders above the door. With a new bar opening you excpect more than the art work and the name to chabge. The whole thing weirds me out, some one needs to open up a cool bar on 13th.

Let's talk facts, shall we? The "artist" simply painted a beard and sunglasses onto the original Johnny painting. So in truth, the Jerry Garcia is just defacement of an iconic landmark in Denver. It shows no respect for the community and even less respect for the artist that painted the original. You won the battle hippies. You took over yet another legendary establishment and made a mockery of it. Now go back to your corporate jobs and smile.

somebody should just paint King Diamond over the thing and call it a day.

Many a Cap Hillite has expressed disdain over what appeared to be an aggressive -- if artistic-- action of literally decapitating the head of a rock legend, on a legendary rock n roll bar, on the infamous rock n roll street, which is anchored by one of the most legendary rock n roll record shops in the country: all for the Fat Man.  Maybe not the best way to introduce yourself to the neighborhood---I mean, anybody Remember the Saga of  7 South? Not saying I support vandalism, but it shows the age ol' adage is true: punks and hippies can never be friends.

@kityempire I always thought punks and hippies were one in the same: both smoke weed, both don't bathe, both are very liberal, both do most their shopping at thrift stores, both always have a dog trailing them.

How about everyone just stops acting like a punk and start respecting others and others'  property?  Treat people like you'd like to be treated.  Isn't that like... a rule... something about GOLD?  But I guess if you like pain and being treated like shit, then carry on Wayne.

I know the Jerry artist personally, he's got friends that will see justice is served to the juvenile vandals. We've already got a few leads.

@stevecarl_1 Yeah, nothing says you are a grown up like logging onto an internet message board and throwing insults at your stereotype of choice because one person decided to throw paint. Way to lead by example. With this warm attitude, you definitely aren't encouraging future actions like this.

@stevecarl_1  @rightonbarto  @eldaveablo Quit pretending like you're speaking for large groups of people. It's terrible that someone defaced this Jerry Garcia mural, and that person should be brought to justice. No one needs you being an idiot and labeling groups of people who you couldn't possibly know whether or not they were involved.

@stevecarl_1  @eldaveablo "Seriously...you punk rock/hipster types need to grow the fuck up." - obviously a specific comment to the person/persons who did this. eldaveablo is right, you're full of it.

@stevecarl_1  @eldaveablo The vandal who painted over JC must be punished.  Most people can't stand Jerry Garcia, let alone the meandering LSD muzak of the Grateful Dead.

If these defacers cared so much about the original mural, why didn't they support the original business that got the mural painted? You had your chance, Benders is gone now, and Quixotes took over. I'm so glad to see this venue will finally be utilized in the neighborhood, great music and great people coming together to have some good ol fashioned fun!! I'll be happy to see Jerry smiling over the neighborhood, and in response to a post below; maybe having more people in the area consistently will scare off the muggers to find another empty street with less people to mug on.

That Tommy's original was taken down is sad; this defacement is sad and disappointing. Come on, Denver. Be better than this.

Although the whole mural debacle is unfortunate, we wish people were so passionate (or even aware) about the scene up here in Ft. Collins.

We fear change.

I'm not as worried about this mural as I am about the poor guy that got stabbed last week right on the corner. Horrible. WTF is going on with violent crime in Cap Hill? My friend was also jumped and mugged right in that same spot at around the same time. Right after closing, in the shadows.

I'm more concerned about putting a Sancho's-esque bar in this exact spot. Its really busy, even compared to the Washington and Colfax location of Sanchos. And, let's be honest, its a bit of a dangerous spot for someone tripping/seriously effed up to stroll out on 13th, unaware of how aggressive that street is. I've seen hundreds or near-miss type situations in that stretch along 13th. Not to be Mr. Nanny here, but good people are getting hit and killed by cars all over town... it's not good and needs to stop.

So, if we can improve the survival ratio on this stretch, then I'll actually give a crap about a mural.

 @yodownmuthalicka

YES, let's live in FEAR.  24/7... No fucking thanks.  If shit happens, it happens.  I've lived in NY; Syracuse (South Salina street ALONE has more crime than the whole city of Denver) and I have also stayed in the ghetto with my best friend that lives in DC.  Try Detroit for a night. This is nothing.  Move to Elba if you are so scared.  Stay in your house like a hermit.  OR CHANGE THE WORLD AND DO SOMETHING!  This negative thinking and whining about something that NEVER EVEN HAPPENED TO YOU is annoying.  Call your Representative, Meet with the Police Chief. Call for town meetings... ETC.

This is just like, my opinion, so try not to take it too seriously and melt over it too much.  Free speech or whatever.

@jabuhrer You're a moron. The mural was fantastic.

But this defacement is no better than painting over Tommy's original work.

jabuhrer
jabuhrer like.author.displayName 1 Like

@sam.dewitt.2001 Well damn, the defacement was certainly unnecessary. I was hoping things would follow their natural order and 7 or 8 years from now some Juggalos would but the struggling place and paint an Insane Clown face over it, and we'd hear these same stupid arguments from the deadheads. HERESY!!!

Hey Loaded, a lot of people care... and guess what? Just because some people (me included) are  bothered but awful mural doesn't mean that it's our only care in the world. I have plenty to bitch about AND celebrate (simultaneously) all the time. Is your mind blown? Fracking locally, yep, that's an topic of deep concern, maybe it should be written about, oh wait it HAS been written about. THIS piece of fodder came from an music/entertainment writer in an ENTERTAINMENT rag! In fact, this is the exact right forum to report on it. And since that's cleared up I think it's fair to say that this is a train-wreck of a mural. It doesn't look good. And to add insult to injury, it's painted over, what was, a really tasteful and classic image of the Man in Black. Are there worse things happening in the world that could be scrutinized? Most certainly. Are there worse art-crimes being committed against the citizens of Denver, especially the ones who frequent that part of 13th? Nope.

milleralexjames
milleralexjames like.author.displayName 1 Like

@rightonbarto No kidding. By Loaded's process of thinking, I shouldn't care about a mural in Cap Hill cause there's kids dying of AIDS in Africa.

It was a really cool mural by a talented artist and it's a shame to see it go. What's a bigger shame is the way it was painted over that the original artist has summed up nicely. Now I hope they paint a wonderful mural over the black wall, whatever it may be, and I'm glad that all the parties involved realized their mistakes and there will be a fresh, clean start.

Who fucking cares? Seriously? With all the SHIT that has been happening in Denver lately..is this really such a serious issue?? So a stupid hippy bar painted over something..is this worse than Hickenlooper suporting local fracking? Or the police brutality issues that have been completely swept under the rug? Or the massive rise in crime over the past year? Really? Is this all you have to bitch about?

I was so bummed to see the Johnny Cash painting gone when I drove by and am now even more bummed that he has been replaced by Jerry Garcia. No hard feelings Jerry, I just never got into your music.

Real piece of art? Says who? You? Because you're a bigger Johnny Cash fan than a Jerry Garcia fan? Have any of you stepped a foot INSIDE of Quixote's ever?

And "captainlemming", fitting in this case. They painted everything black. Nothing remains from the Cash.

absolutely horrible, complete lack of respect for what was a real piece of art.

CaptainLemming

Even worse, as it was just pointed out to me, the 'artist' simply used Johnny Cash's head. The eyes, forehead, and brow are from the original. Pathetic.

It's a terrible injustice to Tommy's Cash mural, but even worse, it looks like someone painted Beethoven with a beard and sunglasses.
