Ten essential gangsta-rap albums

3. Ice Cube -- Amerikkka's Most Wanted
The thing that made Amerikkka's Most Wanted such a controversial album, besides the claims of misogyny and racism, is that it wasn't just an exclamation of anger and hatred at a society he perceived as racist, but an indictment of anybody who didn't share that anger: "I'm darin ya to raise hell and bail and brag and sag/Or beat down for ya flag." And with Public Enemy's chaotic wall-of-sound production behind Cube's fiery incitation, it plays like an unyielding barrage of kinetic energy. Needless to say, this album scared the bejeezus out of suburban parents everywhere by bringing gangsta rap to their doorsteps.
