The Fox Theatre in Boulder is one of the top twenty rock clubs in the country.

Last week, Rolling Stone kicked off its new Venues That Rock series with a list of the twenty best rock clubs in America. Three Colorado venues were ranked in the top twenty: Belly Up in Aspen, which checked in at number sixteen, the Bluebird Theater, which earned a nod at number fourteen, and the Fox Theatre, which landed the fourth spot. According to the magazine, the list was tabulated with the input of dozens of managers, promoters and musicians (full list here).

As rad as it is to see those venues being recognized, you have to wonder just how much work went into putting the list itself together: The description for the Fox, for instance, is exactly once paltry sentence long and manages to squeeze in a left-handed compliment referring to Boulder as an "old hippie town." The descriptions of the Bluebird and the Belly Up aren't any more enlightening, unfortunately. Oh, well. You have to consider the source: This is the same publication that left Twist & Shout and Wax Trax out of its list of the 25 Best Record Stores in the country.

Grumbling aside, the prestige is nice. It's nice and certainly well deserved to see the Fox, Bluebird and Belly Up getting accolades alongside some other great and storied venues across the country, like the Bowery Ballroom in New York, the Troubadour in L.A., the Empty Bottle in Chicago, the Continental in Austin, the Middle East in Boston and the 40 Watt in Athens. And if the thumbnails touting the other forthcoming lists are any indication, we can presumably expect some plaudits for Red Rocks in the list of amphitheaters, due on Friday, June 21.

of the 35 shows the Fox has coming up there are maybe 3-4 shows that can be classified as rock. They are anything but a rock club.  I don't know where they got this information from. Rant from a disgruntled boulder rock and roller transmission out.

In unintended irony, Rolling Stone doesn't make the list of 20 best music-related magazines in the country.

Ogden deserved it more than those three.

i sure don't agree with what they said about the fox being friendly and laid back.

"Skipping over guys to dispense free drinks to cute girls," or "wasting time face-deep in their phones while not serving," must not have been included in the criteria. If that were the case The Bluebird would have failed miserably.

Boulder Theater is much better then The Bluebird and Fox. Never been to belly up.

That story was also written by Steve Knopper, who lives in Denver, so maybe there's a little bias?

Capacity. It'll be on the "theater" list coming out in the future, most likely.

I'd agree with the Belly Up - Aspen choice for sure -great sound system, seating has great view of the stage & nice size dance floor.

The Bluebird for sure. Just a classic venue in many regards and hey, how many venues end up on an album cover (Faithless Sunday 8pm). Fox however isn't spectacular. Never been to Belly Up. I think the Filmore and Ogden though rank higher than The Fox

1st Avenue is a fairly large venue (cap. 1500), which would make it larger than every venue in Denver but the Fillmore.  Perhaps it didn't qualify as a 'club' under their criteria?

Couldn't disagree with you more about the Fox.  It's the best venue I've ever played, and the best I've ever watched live music -- including many others included on the list.  Top-notch sound, professional staff, artist accommodations, and sight lines.

The Fillmore, as a music listening experience, disappoints every time; and the Ogden hasn't been the same since its renovation.  Line arrays = phasey nonsense.

@jmpmk2 Ogden is 1600, but I agree it seems their criteria must be sub 1000 cap...
