Video: Filter drummer turned away at Brothers Bar & Grill in Denver for visible neck tattoos

This past Wednesday night, after playing a show at the Summit Music Hall, Filter made its way over to Brothers Bar & Grill to grab some food and drinks. Drummer Jeff Fabb, who has a rather large tattoo adorning his neck, was denied entry, which irked frontman Richard Patrick, who had reportedly stopped by Brothers earlier that day -- with Fabb. Incensed after hearing about the incident from Fabb, Patrick went back and whipped out his cell phone and filmed the drummer trying to get in again.

"Hi, how are you?" says Patrick walking up to the bar. "This is my friend with a neck tattoo. Is he allowed to come in?" No, the door guy says, politely. "Really? You're not going to let my drummer, the drummer from Filter, come in and eat at your establishment?"

Nope, the unassuming attendant confirms.

With that, Patrick utters a "Wow, okay," and turns the camera and makes his way to the sidewalk, where he offers up a brief aside to fans and tells Brothers (not to be confused with My Brother's Bar on 15th Street) exactly what he thinks. "Hey, all my Filter fans, in Denver, this place fucking place," he says, pointing to Brothers' signage, "sucks dick -- and not in a good way," he clarifies. "In a shitty fucking way, because they won't let anybody in like my friend having a neck tattoo. So fuck you, Brothers! Fuck you very much!"

The band uploaded the video to YouTube and then posted it to its Facebook page later that night, calling for a boycott of Brothers. The post has received more than 800 comments. According to the band's post, the clip was somewhat staged: "Jeff was by himself and got denied. He came back to the bus and told Richard. Richard got pissed went back with him and filmed Jeff being denied for a second time. Richard knew what was going to happen and he filmed it to RAISE AWARENESS!"

I'm pretty sure you can't just say "no black people". That's why their dress code is shit like "No baggy pants, no plain white tees, no sports jerseys".

While I don't agree with their rules on tattoos they, as an establishment, can determine who they wish to serve and who they don't. They aren't out of line on this one. It only backs up their position that it's a steadfast rule that they stand by. You can get upset or just give your business to another company that doesn't care.

Why is this thread still going on? LOL JERRRY! JEEEERY! JERRY! Im chanting, bros.

Boycotting a business because you were upset by the dress code policy is pretty childish. It would be the same scenario as someone hearing a filter song and taking offense to it and then try to boycott your band. The band is your business, your lifeblood, and then some stranger comes along and tries to destroy all your hard earned work. If they dont like the song, DONT LISTEN TO IT. Filter is saying, lets destroy this person business because one of his employees hurt their feelings. If you dont like it then dont go back. Its childish.

I had to serve a customer filled with tatts and a massive predator hair style. Had the teeth grill everything. I work alone in my store. Of course I felt threatened. I would've probably felt threatened if Fabb walked in as well. But talking with him for a few seconds uncovered that he was totally cool. That's why this rule is off. Anyone can cause problems. We can't decide who it might be. That is totally impossible.

Chris Schmitt I bet they did go somewhere else. But why walk away with your tail between your legs and mouth shut when you or your friends were treated wrong in you eyes. Richard was polite to the doorman and aimed this video solely towards his fans. Jesus you are the whiny bitch. Don't you still respect them as an artist and for what they stand up for? If not... bloop... press unlike and peace be with you...

That's why I say your business in Winona MN went into the shitter....Fourtney Brothers need a little less time in the elite skies and a little more time determining who is fleecing them in plain sight.

Same here..but I also respect the right of those who find it ignorant, to challenge the policy and solicit the support of others who find it ignorant. If we didn't have this balance of checks and balances, we'd stifle progress of our so-called society. After all, it was once legal to make African Americans drink from different water fountains...just blindly accepting things as they are, doesn't do the world any good at all.

By law, it is not discrimination of a protected class. This is why Filter isn't claiming this or suing them. Filter is calling for like minded people to join them in a boycott of the establishment. If you don't agree, then don't join in. But, saying the restaurant has a right to completely unchallenged policy is something I can't agree with.

OF COURSE tattoos are dress code.  You knew exactly what you were in-store with when you got that neck or face tattoo.   You chose that sort of look, you have to live with it.

Clint Jahn

That is a discriminatory rule. Dress code is one thing, but you can't change the fact that you have ink. Their justification was that "gangbangers" have neck tattoos and they want to avoid fights (which is why dress codes forbid sports gear or motorcycle leathers), but as long as the tattoo is not obviously gang ink he should've been good to go. "Zero tolerance" rules are bullshit. People need to know which rules need to be relaxed and when.

Do I think the rule to stupid, yes. But, I think Brothers should be able to do whatever they want. No different than requiring a suit and tie.

I went through the same thing at a few of the bars down in that area such as lodos (the one on 104th in Westminster and downtown Denver), sports column, the tavern, cowboy lounge etc... I wish nothing but the worst for these establishments!

Oh now everybody cares when its a celebrity when I wasn't allowed in their facility because of ny neck tatoos and complained about it on fb I even called managers that worked at brother, sports column, and lodo to ask them why should such a rule even exists and to my avail nobody got back to me. Know all of yous feel this celebrity and comment its not right. No its not right for any establishment to judge sombody on their race religion or appearances but it will still happen and now you sheep finally see a picture when a celebrity says something about I smh to you people.

Tattoos aren't "dress". It's no different than me saying I'm not going to let anyone in who has brown hair.

Bars have the right to enforce their dress codes just as they have the right to refuse anyone service. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Denver. Lame, I'm pretty sure corporate is prepared for a lame ass lawsuit. I have tattoos and we all make the choices as to where we have those tattoos. You can't get certain jobs due to visible tattoos on the neck and hands. Security was doing their job. Filter just made an ass of themselves.

@Thomas Maier I didn't realize all black people dress the same.

@Clint Jahn So bouncers have to be charged with discriminating btwn gang tattoos and those that are not?  Ok, that is a recipe for a discrimination suit, and liability.  Blanket rule is easier for them and more legally sound.
