The Monkey Barrel, a new bar and live music venue being brought to us courtesy of Rock-a-Billies owner Jimmy Nigg, was slated to open last month, but after some construction delays, the venue, which is housed in the former Salvagetti Bicycles space at 1611 Platte Street, pushed back its debut. The place is finally open, and we stopped by and got some shots of the place, which is open from 2 p.m to 2 a.m Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

For now, Nigg says he'll start off with live music a couple of nights a week, including punk, alternative and modern rock acts. Then he'll see where that goes, he says, and see what kind of demand is in the neighborhood. "Our plan is to have a venue where people can come in and get a taste of the Denver scene -- local craft beers and then local bands," Nigg says. "We're not going to limit the venue to just having local acts play here. If national acts are touring through here, and they want a place to play, we're going to keep that door open for them because it's a music venue above anything else."

The bar seats forty, and there are three booths that each have their own TVs. There's also a basement that Nigg says he might try to eventually open as either a private room or an arcade.
