Find out how you could open for Prefuse 73 and Nosaj Thing at Cervantes' next week
Jonathan Shoup Prefuse 73 at Artopia
Attention, Colorado producers: Spotlight and Euphonic Conceptions have teamed up to bring you a contest that will put you, the producer, in the opening slot for Prefuse 73, Nosaj Thing and Falty DL at Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom on January 29. It's simple: All you have to do is upload your track, get some votes from your friends and family, and wait for the judging panel to pick the winner. We spoke with Taylor Winum, head of business development at Spotlight, to find out more about the contest, why it's being held and how it works.
The contest isn't based entirely on votes. Since anyone with enough reach can post a track and get a lot of votes from friends and family, Spotlight and Euphonic Conceptions ultimately pick the winner from the top five in the votes category. "Voting is an indicator of your market," says Winum, who connected with Euphonic Conceptions' Josh Pollack and pitched the idea. "Every contest has our winners picked from the top five most voted, or top ten most voted.
"We are trying to create the perfect circle," he adds, "where artists get exposure, promoters provide opportunities to artist, and as we move forward, we can pay out percentages to the artists, the hosts, the promoters, and, of course, keep some for Spotlight, so that we can continue to move forward with these sorts of things."
The best thing about all of this is the exposure that rising artists can get. Since voting is not the main factor in winning, it really comes to the discretion of the promoters. This is also to keep someone from garnering more votes based on friends and connections when their music just wouldn't really fit the bill.
"We try to target the right clientele, but the promoters really know that market more than we do," says Winum. "It wouldn't make sense for a Tiesto promoter to bring a small dubstep act as an opener. It wouldn't make sense. Really we want to connect artists with fans, producers with promoters, and bring the whole community to a perfect circle."
Spotlight.FM is a website that brings promoters, musicians and fans together in order to build relationships and progress the music scene. This contest is designed to showcase new talent, perhaps some unseen faces in the Denver music scene, and give them the chance to open up for some huge talent. "My process, at this point, is reaching out to people that we have a certain level of trust between each other." says Winum. "I show them how it helps promotions, and we go from there."
To enter the contest, all you have to do is head over to the Spotlight.FM contest page and submit your track. From the looks of it, there are already some familiar faces that have been featured in our weekly In The Mix series. Spotlight also has another contest for the upcoming Winter Warmer event on Saturday, February 15, at the Marriot Convention Center.
