Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival announced its lineup earlier this week, but there was some controversy about the truncated roster for the July 14 show at Red Rocks.

Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Asking Alexandria, Trivium and Body Count (Ice-T's metal band) were announced for Denver, but those are the only bands playing that date so far, a divergence from Mayhem Fest's tradition as a day-long show with multiple stages. Metal fans took to social media within hours, claiming they were duped by the fest's boast of nineteen bands. Denver's Iconocaust, who played at Mayhem Fest in 2012, posted its own public service announcement on Facebook:

"Okay kids... for those of you in the DENVER or OKC markets, MAYHEM FEST is not a festival at all. Read the fine print. You're about to be skipped this year by most of the bands on the tour..... Just thought we'd make sure you were paying attention.

Among the things they're referring to are the promotional fliers currently circulating on social media, where there is, in fact, little fine print about the lineup differences. There is a very brief mention in the official press release , which contains the wording "Main Stage acts only performing."

"Our advertising in Denver is clear on what the Denver show is," says Mayhem Fest's co-founder and producer John Reese. "If you go to the website, it is clear what Denver is."

Iconocaust sees additional problems with this year's changes. Vocalist Galen Stevenson says fans of Avenged Sevenfold and the other Mayhem main stage bands will find the stone steps of Red Rocks decidedly less moshable than the grassy slopes of Fiddler's Green. "This is a metal show held at a venue that is not built for people to move around," Stevenson says.

Reese, for his part, says the decision to move Mayhem from its usual home at Fiddler's Green to Morrison's hallowed amphitheater was related to a scheduling conflict involving Avenged Sevenfold. He also hints that there is more news on the way for Denver. "You want to bring the whole show everywhere, but there are space limitations and other limitations. We will announce a surprise," says Reese.

Tickets to Mayhem Fest are on sale today.

"Sponsored by Rockstar Energy". Yeah that's about all you need to know right there. I wouldn't pay $10 to see the entire lineup.

I understand people being upset by the change in venues, because theshow should be a festival and the lack of a second stage. But all the people saying red rocks sucks for a metal show because you cant mosh are frickin stupid. I have moshed at red rocks a couple dozen times, and it is always a good time..

Because it's lame that they moved it, it's on a Monday, and it's only five fucking bands. And at $60 a ticket. Fuck you BPI

Yeah pretty lame. Can't mosh at red rocks, I won't be going, and I've been to mayhem 4 times. Neither will my friends.

just because that TOOL in iconocaust OPENED the festival that one year doesn't make him an expert on the festival. That is why him and his crappy band opened the festival and do not tour anywhere on the lineup...ever. The festival has a strong market in Denver, and are contracted with Live Nation every year, and since Fiddlers Green is no longer a live nation venue, they have to play a venue that supplies a main stage where LN can run the show. It was never the fact that AEG was unwilling to run the festival, its that they either split the income with live nation, rent to live nation for the day or nothing at all. The tour relies on amphitheater because its too expensive to build a main stage in addition to the 2 festival stages that travel on the road already. Honestly, you kids think you know everything......

If anyone respects red rocks they'll understand it's not practical to have more than one stage for the simple fact that the venue would get destroyed. Also, it's not very often that a band with such amazing stage presence as Avenged Sevenfold gets to play such an incredible venue because they are metal (yes... to all you haters, they fall into the metal category...) I personally am stoked to see them play at the best venue in the country!!!!

The reason Mayhem is being held at Red Rocks instead of Fiddler's Green this year is because AEG Live bought Fiddler's and won't allow the festival to happen as it's produced by Live Nation. This, along with other scheduling conflicts is also the reason it's being held on a Monday instead of Sunday.

El Chuy Hernandez look into Black Sky Fest for all of us that are disappointed. Way better lineup, two days this time, multiple stages, and is focusing on quality over profits: this past winter it was Dying Fetus, Skinless, Exhumed, Iron Reagan, Power Trip, Ghoul, Axeslasher, Speedwolf, Native Daughters, Call of the Void, Primitive Man, and others, this year will be bigger, and no lies or deceptive marketing unlike this shit show. It will happen this August, and the lineup for this summer will be released April 20th. They have an active FB page just search for Denver Black Sky. So if death metal/thrash/doom is your thing, keep your eyes peeled. Plus their VIP tickets (totally worth it) will most likely cost less than a general admission ticket for Mayhem. Last year included with VIP package I got a pint glass, a 7inch vinyl, a super sweet poster for the festival that is made really well, stickers, coupons for beer at Black Sky Brewing off Santa Fe here in Denver, VIP seating to rest when youre not busy moshing, as well as pizza and snacks. Definitely look into it.

I've seen many metal shows there over the year (pantera, white zombie, sepultura, slayer) and it may not be ideal for moshing but it's definitely possible. And sounds a whole shit ton better than fiddlers green. Quit yer bitching.

so this is a bunch of shit for mayhem. For one its not mayhem its a god damn a7x show. Witch in my opinion they suck. So if u want me to buy another ticket for this thing called mayhem, then it should be like all the other ones in Denver. All day/evening. An not on a Monday. I think this is gonna change mayhem for the worst. Just think of how much money your going to loose this year for this mistake an for the future. Again if you want MY money bring back the old mayhem an I'll think about it next time. You made the mistake apon yourself. Now deal with it.

good, ot cuts down on the spray of bullshit that mayhem is putting out this year, what a shit tour

I can say that I am upset as well because they cut out all the bands I would have desired to see this summer, leaving me with bands that I do not enjoy at a venue with overpriced tickets. They took a festival that I would have wanted to see 4-7 bands and made it a festival where I do not have a strong desire to see a single one of the bands. If it was included with the other shows, yes I would stay and see them but I will not pay 30 more dollars to be at a standing venue for a metal show that took all the fun out of it. Mayhem fest used to bring a variety of fans to an arena and the fans listened to the various sets from other bands they might not know. They have cut their fanbase and they have lost a lot of potential tickets in the process.

I'm mostly pissed because they're calling it Mayhem Fest but we only get to see a quarter of the festival... for DOUBLE the price. No thanks. I've seen Avenged THREE times, I just saw Trivium last night, and Korn was boring as hell when I saw them in '07... I'm not a fan of A.A. and don't really know Body Count so why pay 60 to 80 bucks for bands I've either seen or really don't want to see? I liked it at Fiddler's not because the venue was all that great but because the experience... 3 stages, all the merch booths you could look around in, simply sitting in the grass with fellow metal and hard rock lovers all day for a student friendly price of 25 bucks. Red Rocks just doesn't suit this type of festival and I don't know what the hell any people involved with this change were thinking.

CANNABAL CORPSE!!!!!! I'm excited I've never been to red rocks it'll be fun to throw piss at korn and avenged sevenfold since korn sucks and avenged sevenfold is playing here almost every other month

yup this is me mayhem sucks this year i will not be going hopefully next year it will be at fiddlers where it always have been in the past ....fuck that only 5 bands this year thats a joke

Justin Vonesh

I was pissed when I first saw this right after I got my tickets but then I realized this will still be a fun show for avenged sevenfold and korn fans such as myself. Evan a fan of asking Alexandra aswell. I am looking on the positive side. It will still be a fun thing to go do on a nice summer night with a friend or two. No reason to sit and complain. Yea it may not be mayhem the traditional way but like I said it will still be a fun thing to do

Correction...most of the bands there are not Metal.

Matt Schultz

Well no duh!!! We're fuckin pissed!!! All the bands most of us want to go see aren't going to be there because avenged seven fag want to record a DVD at red rocks?? That's the stupidest reason to change a all day 3 stage event into a 5 mainstream band show, they want to do a DVD at restocks? Do it on their own tour not mayhem!!! I for one am very outraged if you can't tell!!! I have been going to mayhem every year since they started it and its been an all day rain or shine event, the fact that because one band wants to film a DVD at one specific venue should not cut that day short for the rest of the fans!!

jeff_23_23
jeff_23_23

Agreed with Matt! For us fans it was all about getting together an have a great time until you decided to take mayhem away from us/ Denver people. That's OK tho cause all of us fans are not gonna be going cause of all the shitty bands this year. Think about all the money that you won't be getting from us. Since you took mayhem away. So that being said I don't know if I ever want to go to a mayhem again. If its like this again next year then I won't buy a ticket an for the future
