Eight reasons it's great to be a musician in Colorado, according to the bands

There are successful, vibrant music scenes in every corner of the world. So what makes ours different? We asked several bands playing this year's Westword Music Showcase to tell us: What is, in your opinions, the best thing about playing music in Colorado? Their set times for this Saturday are listed after their responses.

"We believe it really is different than other music markets. Good talent has places to go and an audience to gather, and Colorado is currently a place that the masses are paying attention to."

-- Steve Varney, Glowing House (12:45 p.m. at Curious Theater)

"Man, we are so spoiled playing music here. You can play with any type of band, in any type of venue, on any day of the week, and, with a few exceptions, no one is a dick."

-- Andy Thomas (3:45 p.m. at 100% de Agave)

"First of all, this is a place where people want to be. Second, everyone thinks, almost automatically, that to have any kind of success a band has to go to one of the coasts. Whether that's true or not doesn't matter, but it does place a lot of expectation on the coasts, and takes expectation away from everywhere else. So in a place like Denver, there is a high concentration of people creating without the intention of 'making it.'

"People are creating here because they want to, without an ulterior motive. When no one is looking, that's when you really express something genuine. People create for the sake of creation, like kids in the sandbox. Denver is a place where people want to be, and so its energy is alive and upward. Denver is a place of potentially explosive creativity."

-- David Rynhart, Chimney Choir (3 p.m. at Curious Theater)

"The perks, man. So many perks. Basically free meals everywhere, kisses from strangers, handshakes from successful business people and blessings from every religion's ambassadors. And free burritos. Mostly the free burritos."

--Jeff McCollister, Eldren (2:15 p.m. at Stoney's)

"The community. Sounds lame, I know, but all my favorite bands in town comprise some really righteous people. I consider each one a friend and comrade. A very close second best thing about being a musician here is that smoking dope is legal! And we all know how beneficial Mary Jane is in getting that brain juice flowing."

-- Matthew Loui, Colfax Speed Queen (3 p.m. at Broadways)

"It's easy to carve out your own niche."

-- Keith Curtis, Echo Beds (5:15 p.m. at Roostercat)

"The sunshine. Holed up in our previous respective cities, many of us only wrote sad, brooding music about high school bullies, lost love and such during the long and dark winters. In addition, Denver-ites are very supportive and loyal local music connoisseurs. Plus, they dance!"

-- Gabriel Otto, Pan Astral (6:45 p.m. at City Hall Amphitheatre)

"From the mountains, to the city, to the plains and beyond, this state is never short of creativity."

-- Kalyn Heffernan, Wheelchair Sports Camp (5:15 p.m. at City Hall Amphitheatre)

"The fans are incredible. I know this is such a cookie cutter and cliche response, but without the fans we would just be playing blast beats to ourselves in an empty room. The metal scene in particular is a tight-knit group of individuals. There hasn't been a time where I've been to a show where someone fell down and wasn't helped up by a swarm of people. I'm proud to be a Coloradoan."

-- Kade Beem, IAMTHESHOTGUN (4:30 p.m. at City Hall cue room)
