Outside the Phish Show, Weed Is for Sharing, the Pipes Are Art, and the Cops Are Friendly

It didn't take long to run into weed at the Phish show. Within thirty minutes of going into Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, we saw concert-goers generously sharing hits on their pipes and puffs on their joints and vape pens. THC wax and shatter were also being passed around. The smell of marijuana throughout the venue was strong and constant.

Phish's infamous Shakedown, which was in the parking lot next to the show, is known for its tents of food, tie-dye shirts, Phish paraphernalia and drug paraphernalia. We spent a lot of time there Sunday to see just how many marijuana products we could find.

There was no shortage of edibles. There were weed cookies being sold for two dollars each. There were homemade butterscotch weed brownies and Rice Krispie treats. A man was selling vials of THC-infused liquid that tasted like honey.

Many tents sold glass pieces meant for smoking, some so intricate that they were practically works of art. Large multicolored pipes with glass-blown swirls, curves and spikes were plentiful. There were also the standard one-hitters available, which were more moderately priced. John Dezee, 24, was working one of the tents selling glass pipes. He works for a local private glass blower who supplies shops around town. He said they sold "onesies" the most during the weekend. He also said they sold a lot of pendants and glass spoon pipes. When asked what he and his friends were getting into the most during the three-day event, he said, "We are all smoking the shatter. Doing dabs. Nice hash dabs. We all like the best dabs here." Another man selling glass pipes was layering a THC wax that resembled butter into a vapor pen.

The people in Shakedown seemed to be much more open about drug usage than in the venue. Security and police were extremely laid-back. Police rolled through the Shakedown parking lot blasting the Jaws theme out of their police car and Phish fans cheered. There didn't seem to be any tension whatsoever.

Concert-goer Joey Houli said he'd rather be out on Shakedown if he was on drugs than inside the venue. "If I'm taking in the show I prefer to have a sober mind, and that way I can appreciate the music and let the music take you to that psychedelic place. If you're not going into the show, then come here and get psychedelic in the parking lot."

There were plenty of psychedelics to be found at Shakedown. Acid, mushrooms and molly were definitely around. Nitrous balloons were for sale for 3 for $20, and pretty much everywhere we went, we caught a glimpse of at least one person sucking on or holding their white nitrous balloon.

I didn't notice notice a single police officer or security guard the entire weekend. Glad they mostly left everyone alone.

Maybe the cops were just happy they didn't have to work the CSU - CU game the day before?

Isn't that in Adams County? Sounds like Denver could take some lessons on community relations.

This is so awesome. Sounds like they were just making sure people were actually being safe, and not so worried with ticket quotas. So, so awesome.

I heard one of the cops in a car say over his PA, "I have lots of tickets, but probably not the kind of tickets you're looking for," then laughed.

I saw a cop get out of their car, and walk over to a group of folks in the parking lot. Thought they were gonna get busted for something, cop ends up taking their camera and snapping a few picks on them. :)
