Here's what's good in the Mile High City this week: Tyler, the Creator himself confirmed the two local Odd Future dates in October we mentioned, we also got word of the official onsale date for the three Ween shows we told you about, and learned Duran Duran is coming to the 1STBANK Center. On local radio, Gauntlet Hair, Pictureplane, Hollagramz and Bright Channel got some spins. Meanwhile, at our local record stores, Little Dragons, Kelly Rowland and Washed Out were this week's top sellers. Click through for a full rundown.

Mile High Music Festival not happening

jack-johnson-mhmf.jpg
In case you've noticed that the Mile High Music Festival hasn't announced its lineup yet for this year and you've wondered why -- first of all, congratulations on being astute, but secondly, the lineup hasn't been revealed because, well, there is no lineup this year. There is no festival. After three years, Mile High is reportedly going on hiatus. An official announcement from organizers is expected later this morning, but early reports appear to indicate that the decision was prompted by financial considerations.

10 kinds of bros you'll find at a music festival

Urban Dictionary, the Internet's home for crass generalizations, defines a bro as, "Obnoxious partying males who are often seen at college parties. When they aren't making an ass of themselves, they usually just stand around holding a red plastic cup waiting for something exciting to happen so they can scream something that demonstrates how much they enjoy partying."

It's a safe bet that you've encountered these creatures at one time or another at various large gatherings over the course of the summer -- say, a music festival, for instance, where we spotted these fine chaps, whose photos we're using here, BTW, strictly for academic purposes. After the jump, we give you the full brodown on the individual species for identification purposes in case you happen upon these fellas.

Meet Sancho and Benito: The Knew Mile High mascots of Ozomatli and Weezer

Little did the guys from the Knew know when they picked up a trio of pinatas on Federal this past Friday for their show at the Mile High Music Festival this past weekend that they'd be such a hit. In anticipation of their early afternoon set on the Bison Stage, the boys stuffed their pinata bros with assorted merch and then tossed them into the crowd during the last few songs.

Mile High Music Festival: Matt Morris performing "Money" in Toyota Free Yr Radio Tent

Another Mile High Music Festival is in the books. Weather was ideal, parking was a breeze, and there were plenty of memorable moments at this year's fest, from Rivers Cuomo wandering through the crowd during Weezer's set to Z-Trip throwing down a Colorado-centric version of "California Love" to Cypress Hill blazing an oddly shaped blunt on stage. This, however, has gotta rank up there as one of the most memorable moments: Here's Matt Morris playing a few songs on his acoustic in front of only a dozen or so people in the Toyota Free Yr Radio Tent while the unwitting masses wiggled their asses to Train just a few hundred yards away.

Mile High Music Festival day two travelogue: My Morning Jacket and Bassnectar

My Morning Jacket
My Morning Jacket opened up its set with "Tonight I Want To Celebrate With You" and followed that up with "Gideon" and then "Anytime and "Magheeta." Jim James wove gorgeous guitar lines while jamming in and out of songs, meandering from place to place. The outfit played "Golden," faded drum effects in and out during "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream," and rocked out on "Highly Suspicious," without a doubt one of the highlights of the set.

Weezer covers Gaga and MGMT, embraces its rock-star status at Mile High Music Festival

A piercing series of guitar lines, the push of a pounding drum line and synchronized singing syllables lent an epic feel to the beginning of Weezer's set.

As soon as Rivers Cuomo and company took the stage, it seemed the band was working hard to create a large-scale sense with the set, the illusion that the performance was taking place outside the confines of the festival. Despite the pre-alloted time slot, the band disappeared and reappeared for two encores, lending the show a sense of unpredictability.
The overall effect was impressive and hypnotic, with the set easily yielding some of the best moments of the entire festival.

Mile High Music Festival day two travelogue: BoomBox and Z-Trip

As I crossed the festival grounds toward the Bison tent, where BoomBox was scheduled, I caught strains of Matt Morris and his amazing voice, and Ozomatli getting their reggae-style funk on. I reached my destination just as BoomBox took the stage and immediately knew I was in for a good time. They opened with a slow, smooth, down-tempo number, the live PA and the guitar working beautifully together.

Consecutive sets from Train and Atmosphere provide a sharp dichotomy at Mile High Music Fest

Train-BLF (16).JPG

Train
Train brought back the alterna-ballad '90s (acknowledging that most of the band's output has taken place within the last ten years, I still think the band sounds more like the Goo Goo Dolls or Counting Crows than anything much that's happening now) with a set that left heartfelt emotion to spare, with frontman Patrick Monahan frequently encouraging the crowd to love each other and so forth.

Jimmy Cliff, 3:45 p.m. on the Kyocera Main Stage

Jimmy Cliff and his band delivered all of the expected musical components within the first strains of their hour-plus set.

The godfather of roots reggae and his ensemble set down a set composed of syncopated beats, choppy 2/2 guitar accompaniment and standards of the genre, including multiple selections from the Harder They Come soundtrack.
