Snake Rattle Rattle Snake releases its sophomore album tomorrow night at the Gothic Theatre.
Update: Time's up! We've picked winners for the vinyl and taken down the album stream. Go hear it in person tonight at the Gothic.

Original post follows.

Snake Rattle Rattle Snake spent years working on its sophomore album, Totem. For this week's Backbeat feature, we talked to the band's members about its making. They will finally celebrate its release with a show tomorrow (November 14) at the Gothic Theatre, and they're offering you fine readers a chance to hear the whole thing right here for one day beforehand.

We also have a couple copies of Totem on vinyl you could win. Details (and, more importantly, the album stream) are below.

Still Looking for Halloween Plans? We Have VIP Passes to Coloween For You

Categories: Contests

Aaron Thackeray. More here.
Maybe these two are coming back this year.
Update: And we have a winner! Thanks for playing. Stay safe and warm out there.

We're down to the wire, people: Halloween, which falls on a Friday this year, is only two days away. Personally, I can tell you my costume idea is not working out, but maybe you are slightly more organized than I am. Maybe you have, I don't know, a voodoo-themed outfit planned and nowhere to take it.

In that case, you've come to the right blog post! We've got a pair of VIP passes to Coloween, Denver's annual tribute to facepaint and debauchery, held this year at City Hall. Costume genius Riff Raff will both perform and judge the $1,000 contest.

Update: And our winner is Rach12, with some lines from "The Shiznit." Enjoy!

We welcome our new weed-powered overlords, who fund our schools, drive tourism and, more and more, throw concerts. The biggest non-4/20 show expressly affiliated with the marijuana industry will be this weekend, when the Gypsy Jane Cannabis Music Carnival takes over the Denver Mart. The three-day event features two days of music, with headliners Tyga (Friday) and Snoop Dogg & Tha Dogg Pound (Saturday), along with a slew of others, including Warren G, E-40 and more.

There will also be beer gardens, "smoke tents," a cannabis product fair, a freakshow and more. Only in Denver.

Photo Contest: Win Tickets to See Justin Townes Earle in Boulder

Categories: Contests

Justin Townes Earle is playing at the Fox Theatre on Saturday, September 27. What you see here is a portion of the cover for his latest album, Single Mothers. It is another jewel in a growing catalogue of remarkable work. Earle has a unique ability to see the dignity and ugliness alike in modern, everyday life.

Newly sober and married, this record finds him delivering that viewpoint with renewed clarity. You can see for yourself tomorrow; here's how.

This week's cover story is about how Lyons developed a music community and how that community has been impacted by the flooding last fall.

Much of the story focuses on Planet Bluegrass, an organization that three music festivals, including two at its ranch in Lyons. This weekend, it will be open for RockyGrass, its first festival since the flood caused $1.3 million worth of damage nine months ago.

The Westword Music Showcase ticket contest

Categories: Contests

Aaron Thackeray
It's pretty much a good time, is what we're saying.
Update(s): We've picked a winner for questions number one and two. So far we've somewhat arbitrarily given tickets to people who have suggested that a great music scene needs radio support and that the best thing about Denver's music scene is that everyone from "budtenders" to businessmen go to the shows. I say arbitrarily because there have been so many good entries. If you would like to peruse perhaps the most informative and encouraging comments section on the internet, just head to the bottom of this post. Thanks, everyone.

We've got another question below, and another pair of Showcase tickets to give away.

Original post follows...

The Westword Music Showcase is on June 21. You should spend your hard-earned money on whatever concerts appeal most to you. But we think this one's appealing. The lineup includes 2 Chainz, Diplo, Cherub, Man Man and King Khan & the Shrines. That alone is plenty to anticipate. Among his accomplishments, 2 Chainz can count bringing within one degree of separation 85-year-old satirical songwriting mathematician Tom Lehrer and Geto Boys member Scarface (they're both featured on 2013's Based on a T.R.U. Story, Lehrer in a sample and Scarface in a guest verse). And I could be wrong about this and it's definitely not binding, but I'm pretty sure King Khan's shows still come with a money-back guarantee of a wardrobe malfunction.

Those touring acts will play the main, outdoor stage here in the Golden Triangle. But that constitutes approximately three percent of the total live music you'll find at the Showcase. There will also be some 150 Colorado bands and artists playing venues in area, all nominees for this year's Westword Music Awards. We'll be announcing those next week. Now, about that hard-earned money.
