Get to the Points: Kiva Restaurant
After a one-year hiatus (and some lackluster years before then), Juneteenth is coming back to Welton Street this year. A celebration of the day when African-Americans in Texas learned that they'd been freed -- more than a year after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation -- Juneteenth is observed around the country, and at one point Denver claimed to host the biggest celebration.
This year's event, on Saturday, June 14, marks a grassroots, community effort to bring back Juneteenth, and is a good reason to head to Five Points. But any day is a good one to visit the Kiva, which occupies the former home of Tosh's Hacienda. Just around the corner from the point where five streets come together, the Kiva boasts a wonderful, enclosed patio and a great happy hour from 4-7 weekdays, with $2 beers and KivaRitas, as well as a free taco bar with purchase of your beverages. (Fair warning: you may have to ask your server for the spread, since the Kiva decided it would be more hygienic to just deliver the tacos, rather than put out a buffet. And these days, you can forget tomatoes!)
