Candy Girls: Bahlsen Domino Lebkuchen

We found the Bahlsen Domino in the large and varied display of Lebkuchen and Stollen at the Cost Plus World Market in Cherry Creek. While many versions of Lebkuchen featured gingerbread covered in dark or white chocolate, we were drawn to the German-made Bahlsen Domino because it took the concept one step further, layering gingerbread, apple pulp and persipan and covering it all with a dark chocolate. Apple pulp? Persipan? That's not just sketchy, that's fancy sketchy.

Neither of us had heard of persipan before. A cousin to marzipan, perhaps? A brief glimpse at the ingredients told us that 4 percent of the confection was made from apricot kernels, which is strange, because we were pretty sure those weren't just inedible, but poisonous. Curious, we hit up Wikipedia and discovered that our hunch was right: Persipan is similar to marzipan, only instead of being made from ground almonds, it's made from ground peach or apricot kernels. Even better? The kernels contain a toxic glycoside and have to be detoxified before use. Sounds dangerous! Let the tasting begin!

First Reactions:
The bite-size treats are tempting and unusual-looking, not unlike a petit four.

Liz: I'm not holding out much hope for these. I think they'll be bland.
Aubrey: Really? I think they could be pretty good.
Liz: They are much lighter than I was expecting. I thought they'd be dense from the description.

Taste: The layers stay separated once you bite into the candy, not mushing together. The gingerbread layer is crumbly underneath the stiff jelly and creamy persipan

Liz: It reminds me of those chocolate-covered jelly sticks.
Aubrey: Yeah, it's the combination of chocolate with that gummy fruit texture.
Liz: This is actually way better than I thought it would be. I would even say it's good.
Aubrey: I say so. What do you think of the persipan?
Liz: It does taste a lot like marzipan, but grittier. The bottom later is a bit dry.
Aubrey: I'm not getting "gingerbread" from it.

[At this point, Joe enters and we force him to be a guest taster.]

Joe: [face contorts] Ughghgh. I don't like this.
Liz: You don't like it?
Joe: Blech. Wait, is there coconut in here?
Liz: No.
Joe: Oh, that would have explained it. Do I have to finish it?
Aubrey: Yes.
Liz: No.
Joe: [walking away] She said no, so I don't have to.
...
Joe: Well, maybe I will.

Conclusions:
Would we finish it? The Candy Girls would, though the jury is still out on Joe.
Would we purchase again? For a strange foreign candy, this was actually pretty tasty and affordable. And apparently non-poisonous, which is always a bonus. We would buy this again.
