It's the battle of Boulder -- cupcake-style!
It's Memorial Day weekend, which means it's time for the Bolder Boulder, when over 50,000 people will run around the Green City. But there's an even more enthralling competition happening in Boulder this weekend. And it involves cupcakes. Lots of them.
Thank the people at Tee & Cakes at 1932 14th Street in Boulder for for providing the perfect antidote to this weekend's race. At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, they're hosting the World League of Competitive Eating Sponsored, 1st Annual Cupcake Cram!
For an in-depth (maybe a little too in-depth) analysis of this august event, let's go to fellow Westworder Liz Kellermeyer in the booth.
"My competitive eating knowledge runs deep," says Kellermeyer, "and the main thing is that Dale 'Mouth of the South' Boone will be competing in the competition, which is a sanctioned event of the competitive eating group he founded last year, WLOCE. Boone used to be a member of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which is the main competitive eating group, but he was kicked out/quit a while back for all kinds of reasons. He's kinda the bad boy of competitive eating."
While Boone is from out of town, the four other eaters are from the metro area, and will be comp-eating for a handsome $250 cash prize. The rules are simple: You get ten minutes to eat as many Tee & Cakes cupcakes as you can. Eat the most, keep 'em down and walk away with the prize.
And what type of cupcakes? A great deal of thought went into that decision, according to Kim Boos, co-owner of Tee & Cakes. "We just had a meeting, and are thinking vanilla. We wanted to do chocolate, but it is super-moist and fudgy, so vanilla will be more challenging. We'll also have pink vanilla icing because of the five boys eating."
