Gemelli's morphs into House, moving from Italian to American comfort foods

Yesterday morning, after downing a delicious plate of housemade corn beef hash at Kyle's Kitchen, the decades-old diner at 4018 Tennyson Street, I meandered down Tennyson Street toward Gemelli's, the East Coast Italian joint at 4363 Tennyson Street that served Jason Sheehan some of the best shrimp scampi he'd ever had.

Well, Sheehan is going to have to search anew for shrimp scampi, because Gemelli's, I discovered, is no longer Gemelli's, but House, an American joint brought to us by Dave Kauderer and Chris Colbea (both former employees of Gemelli's) and Jeff Young, the neighborhood veterinarian at Planned Pethood Plus, a low-cost vet at 4170 Tennyon Street. "There were problems with Gemelli's," admitted Colbea, "but we're on a new path now and we're really excited for the neighborhood to see what we're doing." Which, according to Colbea, is contemporary comfort food.
"We're trying to keep the menu and our prices realistic," explained Colbea. "We want this to be the kind of place where you can come in, eat quickly for not a lot of money, or come in, throw down and have a great night."

The menu, designed by Mikel Seaman, who did time at the Fourth Story, Rhino Room and Domenic's, a restaurant in Fort Collins, comprises feel-good foods like pot pies, meatloaf, roasted chicken, macaroni and cheese, ahi tuna casserole and thin-crusted pizzas. "It's a really fun menu, and Mikel is an outrageously talented chef and super-nice guy, so he's a perfect fit for our house," said Colbea.

And about that name, House: "Aside from the fact that this really is a house, we want it to be like a house party here, where we can open our home every day and have people come over," Colbea told me.

Did you hear that, people? Party at their house!
