Look forward to the book. I really liked Mike Seely's version for Seattle. Is there a planned version for all Village Voice locations? Always good to find the best local watering holes when in a new city. Thanks.

Not sure Sputniks qualifies as a "dive" bar--too many hipsters and the food is too good. 404 is a great choice, and I would throw in the Squire and Lion's Lair as well.

PS Lounge - hand down. Original 70s decor, free Alabama slammer shots (aka Sunny D & Sloe Gin), roses for the ladies and the ever present Pete. AND I even know what the PS stands for. Do you? I love this bar...

Lancer Lounge for sure. Brown Barrel is where the hobos go to cash in their sock nickels for draws of Busch Lite.

Berkeley Inn. You can stumble across the street, play ten frames of bowling and then do shots of Jameson off the fender of some dude's Harley (not a sexual reference Jason S., in case you're reading, you sick fuck).

I have a soft spot for PS Lounge, too. Must be all the roses and Tampico shots.

Berkeley Inn. Doesn't get much divier and they poor a stiff (and cheap) drink.

Tavern 13. CHEAP drinks. No frat boys. Staff that remember you after two visits.

Rockbar? Really? That's just a shitty excuse for some coked-out hipsters to spill PBR on shag carpet.

In addition to BarBar, The Lancer, The PS, etc. I would also say the Nob Hill (another cash-only wonder), Williams Tavern (where Sunday brunch is greasy, disgusting and amazing all at the same time), and The Arabian Bar (which is one of the few places in the Highlands that hasn't been turned into an Ikea nightmare)

It's too bad you can't do a retrospective about all the great dives that Denver has lost: the 15th St. Tavern, the scary place that used to be across 15th from the 15th St. Tavern, Joe's Cave, Club Aeroplane, the It'll Do, and a million other places that were pissy, smoked-filled holes long before it became hip. That would be a fun read as well.

@Mojiferous: Arabian Bar, good call. Last time I was there, I stumbled with some regulars to Ron And Dan's The Keg on 38th, which is another great dive.

I'd also like to nominate Mr. A's "Denver's friendliest" at 40th and Steele.
