Beer and Cheer: Spruce Goose at Steamworks

When I first tried this beer last year, on the recommendation of a liquor-store employee, I thought I'd gotten a bottle from a batch that had been contaminated. Although it smelled like pine trees, it tasted like, well, the mold that grows on a plastic container full of spaghetti that's been hiding in the back of the fridge for three months.

But people rave about it. So I tried it again this year, and I'm sorry to say that I could barely stomach a single sip. I'm not sure why my taste buds react so strongly to this beer, which is reportedly brewed with eighty pounds of spruce tips from trees near Durango.

Steamworks is a great little brewery that makes an excellent IPA as well as Ale Diablo, one of the most deliciously odd beers I have tasted in a while (it's brewed with Riesling grape, which lends an amazing, sweet, fruity flavor).

But I'm going to have to lose the Goose.

See the rest of Beer and Cheer here.
