Buchi Café Cubano is one of Denver's most bewitching little restaurants, an intoxicatingly jovial spot paradoxically shoved next door to a bail bondsman. It's packed from sunrise to close with families, singles that camp out at the counter, cops and probably criminals, too. There's no better squat in town in which to watch the baristas talk back to the hissing espresso machine while you're waiting for the city's best café con leche, a sweet prelude to the aye conyo, which, according to some quick research, translates to a few different things, one of which will go unwritten, the other of which just means "fuck" -- or something like that. Whatever its literal definition, the sandwich is an ambrosial sum of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pepperoni, turkey, hot peppers, onions, pickles and mustard stuffed between two pressed slices of griddled Cuban bread that's simultaneously soft and crisp. It's as close to a perfect Cuban as you'll find in Denver, and one of the best sandwiches you'll eat between here and Miami.
