The Blue Moon brewers keep busy at the Sandlot at Coors Field

Baseball players go fishing in the off season and umpires have their eyes checked. But what about brewers -- particularly the guys who run the Sandlot at Coors Field, which is only open during baseball season and only on game days?

Turns out they just keep making beer and, in particular, beer for some of Colorado's ski resorts, says John Legnard, part of the brewing team at the Blue Moon Brewing Company @ The Sandlot, 2161 Blake Street. "We don't want people to think we're just sitting around."

Over the past few months, the Sandlot has whipped up Mary Jane Ale, a Scottish-style red that is sold at Mary Jane; Copper Bowl Ale, a brown ale poured only at Copper Mountain; and Fresh Tracks Ale, a lighter amber that Vail and Aspen have picked up.

While Blue Moon was actually invented at the Sandlot in 1995, it is primarily brewed now by the parent company, MillerCoors. The Sandlot, in the meantime, makes its own beers that it only pours onsite and in competitions.

On tap for the Rockies home opener on Friday: Blue Moon; Right Field Red, the only other Sandlot beer still around since 1995; Honey Moon; a helles called Where the Helles Bill; and Wild Pitch Hefewiezen; and another German-style wheat beer that hasn't been determined yet.

And since this is Blue Moon's fifteenth anniversary, Legnard says he may brew some other special versions of that beer as well. Sounds like a refreshing season.
