Maggie & Molly's brings scratch-baked goods to Sixth Avenue

Growing up, Mary Lovett loved to cook and learned a lot from her mother and grandmother -- but it was watching Martha Stewart that really showed her how to bake. "She taught me quality and standards and not to compromise," Lovett says.

Lovett's years of study paid off last month, when she opened Maggie & Molly's at 2908 East Sixth Avenue. The store features cookies, cupcakes, scones and other goods, including pies and cakes, baked from scratch. The chocolate chip cookies are "by far" the most popular, Lovett says, though people also really like the sour cream sugar cookie. And she also has twenty cupcake flavors in her repertoire.

Lovett had been baking professionally for four years, but wanted to build a strong following before opening a retail location. "I wanted to make sure it's not just my friends telling me how great I am," she admits.

She found a great spot in a short strip mall of shops on Sixth. Maggie & Molly's, named after two of Lovett's three cats, is flanked by The Truffle on one side and a consignment shop on the other; there's a beauty shop, too, that "sends everyone here, even if they don't want to be here," Lovett says, laughing. "I've benefited from having really good neighbors."

Cupcakes go for $2.25 a piece, and most cookies for $1.50. Scones cost $3 each and decorated sugar cookies are $2. Store hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
