What's in a name? Doughnuts and beer if you're in The Hole

When Mike Delmonico mentioned the name of his new restaurant, The Hole, I swallowed a giggle, hesitating before eventually asking him if he'd thought about all the different ways in which a name like that could be misconstrued, maligned or misinterpreted. "I'm not worried," he deadpanned.

Fair enough, but when The Hole opens in early July at 3877 Tennyson Street, turning out doughnuts and beer, can you imagine the fun that all the drunktards will have devising new drinking games? "I'm not worried," repeats Delmonico, who just graduated from Johnson and Wales with a pastry degree.

The idea for The Hole, says Delmonico, was conceived after too many mediocre late-night meals at the Denver Diner and Pete's Kitchen. "I've worked in a lot of bars where I wouldn't get out until 5 a.m. and I just got sick and tired of going to Pete's and the Denver Diner, so I got together with a bunch of my friends and started talking about fun things we could do with food late-night," explains Delmonico.

Doughnuts, for example. And beer. And after beer? Coffee. The menu, Delmonico tells me, will market 20 to 30 different doughnuts a day, plus breakfast sandwiches (on doughnuts), apple fritters, sandwiches and a full bakery stocked with flatbread pizzas, croissants, danishes, breads and cream puffs. "I've got 50 or 60 doughnuts in the mix, including a chocolate doughnut with Guinness cream, a PB and banana one, a Jack-n-Coke doughnut, and I'm even thinking of doing a pork belly doughnut with an apple glaze." Which sounds awesome.

When The Hole opens, Delmonico will dish out doughnuts 24/7 on the weekends and until 11 p.m. during the week.
