Manny Howard turned farmer for a new book.
Brooklynite Manny Howard gaves new meaning to the term "urban farming": He took his 800-square-foot back yard and turned it into the first working farm in Brooklyn in generations. His goal: to subsist for a month on what he could produce on his farm.

As anyone who's ever owned a garden -- let alone an entire farm -- could have told him, this wasn't going to be easy. He had to deal with natural disasters, animal deaths and a severed finger (yes, you read that correctly) during his experiment, and he shares the entire ordeal with us in My Empire of Dirt. But Howard's not your typical locavore, Slow Food-type; he doses his book with a healthy helping of skepticism and humor.

Hear him read from the book and have him sign your copy at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Tattered Cover LoDo, 1628 16th Street. Call 303-436-1070 or go to www.tatteredcover.com.
